Q: Online degrees vs. Traditional education? How are the two different according to corporate america?
I just enroled at the University of Phoenix to finish my degree in business administration. I own a small business and am getting the degree for myslf but was wondering if at some point if I decided to get a job somewhere else if it would matter so much where I got the degree. How is the University of Phoenix business program different from a State University or other business schools. How is online education viewed by corporate america.

A: From my experience, online vs. traditional makes no difference unless your talking online vs. ivy league schools. As long as you do the work and get the education, most places don't even inquire as to where you went. Experience is the key... if you own your own business currently, I'd say in corporate America, that would be your best asset!

Q: Does online education degrees really count in New York City?
I am working but would like to eventually be a teacher I was looking at the online teaching programs, they are so tempting.

A: Check with your state department of education. Some online degree programs are ligit, others are scams. Before you begin, make sure it is recognized by your state dept. of ed.

Q: Can anyone recommend a good place to research online degrees or a good online education directory for school?
I am thinking about taking online courses. I wanted to know if there was a site that can show me a wide selections of online schools, online courses, online degrees and or online degree programs. I am mainly interested in online education only. I prefer to learn at home while I work on my career.

A: www.degreeinfo.com Search over 300 regionally accredited distance learning programs to find the perfect program for you! Just enter the degree level and one or more fields of study: Great forum for asking questions also

Q: Online Education?
Is getting a degree in education frowned upon by employers? Is it hard to find a job? I am taking a course online and it is harder then the brick and mortar school. Anybody that has an online degree please let me know.

A: Your question is not clear--are you concerned about whether a degree in education is frowned upon or whether an online degree is frowned upon? A degree in education is a respected degree and there is a severe need for teachers, especially in the upper grades. An online degree will depend on the school, whether it's accredited and what types of degrees the school offers--there are some accredited online schools who offer a wide variety of courses and degrees that are equivalent to any other college. But, there are also some who are essentially diploma mills that offer "life learning" credit that essentially mean nothing. I'm currently taking courses for my Masters online, and from what I have been able to determine from my manager, it's not going to matter that it's an online degree program--the most important thing is going to be my work references, and since you're a working adult, I'll bet the same is going to be true for you. Once you get your first job, education plays less of a role than employment history and references. Good luck.

Q: When Do You Think Online Degrees Will Finally Be Accepted By Professionals As Legitimate?
I was looking at an online university as one of my options for grad school and immediately i found out there is a great amount of resistance in accepting online degrees in the professional world. Even if the education is of high quality, online degrees are generally dismissed as inferior or even fake. It seems to me that one day, online education will be very common. How long do you think it will take before online education will be widely accepted, if you think it will one day be widely accepted?

A: That thinking is outdated. Many professionals now take courses online to further their careers while they work. Soldiers who are stationed overseas are prime examples of online students . If you choose an school that is legitimate and has accreditation, the degree should be accepted without a blink of an eye. There are many state universities that offer these types of undergrad and grad degrees right along side their "regular" degrees in their catalogs. There is nothing on the diploma or on the transcript that says the classes were taken non-traditionally! I got my BS in Information Systems Management (magna cum laude) from the University of MD. I also have an Associates from a local community college. No one has ever asked me if the degrees were obtained online or not . Only a handful of my classes were 'traditional' with a majority of classes done online and a few by TV (which was not a good experience for me). It is actually harder to take classes online because you do not have the direct support of classmates and the professor. A few of my professors were thousands of miles away. I found it challenging and rewarding because it made me resourceful though. Do your homework before signing on with any school. Good luck! I am going for my master's next fall and plan not to take a single step in a classroom!

Q: Can you get a Physical Education degree online?
My husband is currently an English teacher, but is thinking about becoming a PE teacher. Does anyone know if you can get this degree from a reputable online school? If so, where? We aren't interested in Univerity of Phoenix. Thanks for your help!

A: He does not need another degree. He already has a state issued credential - all he needs is another authorization. See your states website - it usually only involves a few classes for what is called a supplemental authorization.

Q: are online schools for an associates degree in healthcare considered a valid education to employers?
I keep getting all these e-mails for an on-line associates degree for medical transcription and other careers in the healthcare field, I have been tempted to do it but I wanted to know how employers view an online education versus going to the tech/trade school, is the degree online just as valid

A: “My advice is to avoid online educators: these largely sign up people with low self-esteem, or those desperate for qualifications, and lacking knowledge of educational options.” Wow, I’ve seen a lot of clueless people, but this post takes the cake. I teach onground for a college and also online courses. People that take online courses are usually in the military, working 45+ hours, have familiies, and / or don’t have a college nearby that offers the courses they need. They are much more motivated than the traditional students I have onground, and generally score higher in comparable courses. First thing that you need to do is find out if the college is regionally accredited, you can check at www.chea.org. This means they have been reviewed by an independent third party, so that you can rely on their program. For something like medical transcribing, you’ll have no problem having your degree accepted, we have no problem with placement. Keep in mind, a degree is just one component of the hiring process.

Q: Does it matter if you go to a university or online education for a real estate appraiser career?
I'm looking for a career change and I was thinking about real estate appraisal and I was wondering what the best route to take is ..bachelor's degree, online education, classes through a real estate licenseing school? Also how steady and reliable is this career field ?

A: Don't waste your time with online stuff. And don't go to a university. Find a local program that allows you a few months of study and hands on work,

Q: I want to do my Phd in microbilogy.suggest collage which offer online degree, distance education ,as i work?
I want to do my Phd in microbilogy.suggest collage which offer online degree, distance education ,as i work. i have done my Msc in microbilogy

A: You cannot do a laboratory based science doctorate from a distance - PhD's in science are based on research. Nor should you do it in an environment which does not allow you to interact with colleagues in person. If you have a masters in microbiOlogy, you should have some idea of the major contributors in an area of research that interests you. Contact the scientists and look for a good supervisor - one who is productive and who is effective in advising his students (who you should also talk to). Investigate potential supervisors before you make any commitments. Most graduate departments offer scholarships (or will support your application to funding agencies), bursaries, and teaching assistanships to graduate students; if your advisor had a grant, he/she may be able to help support you. In general, you have to commit yourself to several years of more than full time work to finish a doctorate - that is just a fact of life. You may well have to choose between working full time (but not getting a doctorate) or going to grad school and accepting the financial support offered by the university, which will be less than you would receive from most full time jobs. I am all for advanced study, if you are absolutely committed to several years of hard work in your area of study as your first priority. It is much easier to flunk out of grad school than in college, and you run that risk if you are not fully committed to the program or if you choose a poor supervisor.

Q: Online special education degree?
I would like to pursue a degree in special education. I live in rural Pennsylvania right over the Mason-Dixon line. I have a busy life with a job and family to take care of. Does anyone know of a way to get part of my degree online and do my student teaching on site? I currently hold an associates degree. Thanks much!

Q: Which good American/European universities offer Bachelors degree in education online/ correspondence?
anybody doing online Bachelor ( education) degree?

A: American universities don't generally offer it. To get an education degree, you have to do things like practicums and student teaching, and that requires actually being at the university. You could try taking a few of your general education courses online to get started and then register at a regular university to finish your degree.

Q: Are online degrees respected as much as degrees from traditional on-campus schools?
I am really interested in pursuing my education online--the flexible schedule would be really helpful. But I wonder if employers really view online degrees the same as traditional "hands-on" degrees.

A: I don't know if there is a blanket answer to that. It will get often get you an interview just to HAVE a degree, no matter where it's from (not always). But you have to be prepared to sell how that education was as rigorous as a tradtional college and how you excelled. I can honestly say I haven't been impressed seeing it on paper, and frankly the candidates with online degrees haven't always been the best in my experience, but sometimes I see great candidates with online degrees, especially for a Master's Degree.

I am looking to find online degree in either elementary or secondary education. In particular, history. thanx.

A: I believe Phoenix Online does. And I am pretty sure you would still do practicum work and student teaching. I just did my masters through Walden online and loved it. It was very convenient and I learned a lot. Online schools are really making their way up there these days!
