Q: Masters Degree?
I have a Bachelors of science and it seems like my degree is taking me nowhere. I am wondering what people generally think about the following question: Is a Masters degree more likely to land a person a job if they get a Masters? My degree is in aerospace

A: It might, but not necessarily. I used to know someone who was working on her master's degree years ago, but has never completed her thesis last I heard. At the time, she already had a job, and her lack of a masters' degree didn't stop her from moving up to an administrative position.

Q: What is the difference between a professional degree and a masters degree?
I came across an analysis comparing the amount of money people make with various levels of education, and there it was - the "professional" degree. What constitutes a professional degree, and why is it different from a masters degree? Are they talking about trade schools? Because the analysis ranked it higher than a masters degree, but lower than a doctorate. Anyone know?

A: Professional degrees include M.D, J.D., Pharm.D., Psy.D., M.Div., M.Ed., etc.

Q: What kind of masters degree best suites a law degree?
A lot of the law schools that I am considering have dual degree programs in both public affairs and physical sciences. Which direction is the best way to go? I really like working with people and am very interested in patent law and other forms of law that involve the sciences. Would it be better to get a masters degree in science/technology/environmental policy, or to get a degree in either an engineering or physical sciences field?

A: You MUST have an undergraduate degree in hard science or a minimum of coursework in order to practice patent law.

Q: Is it possible to achieve a Masters degree right after I get a Bachelors degree from a different field?
I just wanted to know if I can get a Masters degree in a medical/science field if I have a Bachelors in Business with minor in biology & chemistry. I want to be able to make good use of my degree in the Military, Air Force branch.

A: I'm getting my masters in a totally different field from what I studied in my undergraduate studies. However, I took two years off, to work and gain experience (and take community college classes) one the subject that I wanted to pursue my masters in. But, you have a minor in that subject, so you don't really need to do any of that. I think you can get it right away if you have great recommendations, test scores, and whatever else they feel you have that they want in their program. Good luck!

Q: How much can a teacher get paid with a masters degree ?
I have recently applied to colleges for nursing, but i have thought about it and i don't think nursing is for me so i switched to early childhood education and teachers make a lot less money than nurses. People have told me a masters degree will get me a higher salary. I am planning on teaching any grade from pre-k to 3rd. So i was wondering if anybody knew the average salry of a teacher with a bachlors degree vs. a teacher with a masters degree.

A: FYI, early childhood majors don't usually earn as much money as other majors (elementary, secondary, etc.). In my area, teachers with Master's degrees generally make about $1,500 to $2,500 more per year on average. However, most districts also have an increased pay scale for additional graduate credits that have not yet accrued to a degree. (Like if you have taken 3 grad school classes, you would get paid a little bit more. Obviously not as much as a full Master's!) Good luck!

Q: What are the easiest masters degree programs to get into?
I am about to graduate college and I want to go to get a masters degree afterwards in business. Problem is, my gpa sucks(2.6). All these places want you to work after college. But I think that is just stupid. The whole reason I want to get a masters is because I can't find any jobs! So, what places are really easy to get into and will accept anybody out of college with crappy grades?

A: If you're ready to pay money for grad school, perhaps you should use that money and take another college program that you would be interested in enough to get good grades. Or perhaps you need to re-do your last college year and come away with better marks. A college education doesn't mean someone owes you a job, and if you won't work hard for your education, what makes an employer think you'll work hard for them???

Q: How is a masters degree different from the undegraduate?
What are the essential aspects of a Masters degree module? How different is it to an undergraduate module?

A: First...you must have an undergradutate 4-year degree to undertake a Master's degree. An undergraduate degree indicates that someone has a basic foundation of detailed knowledge for a subject/skill, and can discuss it effectively. A Master's degree means that a person has a much more in-depth level of existing knowledge about a subject, and has "Mastered" the application of that knowledge to practical uses, academic investigation, etc. The person truly is a "master" of the subject. A Doctorate adds in that the person has brought new knowledge to the area of study through research.

Q: Working on a masters degree while looking for work. Should I tell prospective employers?
I'm currently working on a masters degree that should help me in my profession in the long run. I'm also currently looking for work. Do you think telling employers about the degree (that I'm still working on) will help me or hurt me? Should I wait to tell them until I'm hired? My concern is that employers will think my attention will be divided between working for them and studying. The masters program is self paced, therefore it shouldn't interfere with work. I've taken 2 classes so far and have 10 more to go. On the other hand telling employers might help me because they will see me as more knowledgeable and commited to my profession.

A: I think you should tell them. It gives the perception that you are self motivated and self improving. It partially qualifies you for positions that requires graduate degrees and gives you an edge over those with only a Bachelor's degree. The day I started my graduate work, I put it on my resume with my planned graduation date even though it was 2.5 years away at the time. This gave me an edge. If the employer minds, you probably will not want to work for them over the long term as they here is a significant values mismatch there. Lastly, you would hope that the potential employer would have a tuition reimbursement policy where they would help you pay for it. Paraclete Performance

Q: Who has a masters degree and is having a hard time finding work?

Q: Is it worth doing a Masters degree in Accounting if you're already a fully qualified chartered accountant?
Or would it be worthwhile doing a Masters in Finance instead. Or perhaps a Masters in Law. My ultimate goal is to open my own Accounting practice, but looking for another degree that will be complimentary.

A: I would say that it depends on what type of accounting you want to specialize in. If you want to focus on tax law, perhaps a law degree would be useful. If you want to specialize in finance such as handling investments or advice to high net individuals, then it's finance. If you want to be more of a general practicioner, then a Masters in Accounting is probably the way to go (although it's not required). Even within general practice you'll have to make some decisions such as whether you want to focus on tax or auditing. Another consideration is that you may want to look at an MBA especially if you want to open your own firm. My experience has been that accountants are great with the accounting side of a business but aren't any better than anyone else with no experience on the business side of things..

Q: Can I become a film professor if i earn a masters degree at an exceptional film grad school?
Hers my story. I am an aspiring film editor. Film editing has long been my passion. I am planning to attend USC, UCLA, or NYU for grad school to get my masters degree. If I decide to become a professor of film instead of film editing, would a masters degree from one of these schools (three of the top film schools in the world) get me a career as a professor of film at a university?

A: Sorry to teach at high school - bachelors community college - masters Universities - a doctrine degree.

Q: How can I get my masters degree paid for?
I am trying to fnd a way to get my master's degree paid for. I want to get a masters in Speech Pathology but it is very expensive. I have heard of a program where you promise 2 years of work for every year that they pay for and it is paid for by a school district. Any other Idea's?

A: http://www.asha.org/about/news/2005/Loan-080205.htm provides information about the program that I think you're talking about. You'd take out a specific type of loan, work for 5 years, and get $5000 forgiven in this program. It's also possible to apply for grants for graduate studies like this. There's an email address for more information at the bottom of that link, and that organization (ASHA) is probably a very good source for you. I know that the state of Alaska has a similar program, though you promise years of working in bush towns in exchange for forgiveness.

Q: Can I get my masters degree in something different from my Bachelor's?
I just graduated with my Management Information systems degree but I changed my mind at the last minute. I really want to do something in graphic design. But I didn't follow my desire and went with the dreams of someone else. Now that I got older and grabbed a hold of myself. How can get my masters in Graphic design or something related to Visual Arts. I just mess around with art but never thought of it as a career till now. Is it possible. HElp me thanks! :D

A: Yes, in fact many people go on to do just that. You might be at a bit of a disadvantage in that you may lack the core courses, but you can take the ones you need. For example, when I was a biology undergrad, I worked in a lab with some other undergrads and some grad students. One lady had her BS in something like History or English or something like that. But she was in a Masters program for biology. She had to take the courses she didn't have. I think she did most of them at a local community college (they're usually called pre-requisites). But yes, it IS possible, not easy, not cheap, but if it's what YOU want, you will find a way to do it. Email some grapic design program directors at some universities and ask them what pre-reqs are needed to get into their programs. Then you'll have a starting point. Make sure you mention that your undergrad work was not in graphic design, but in MIS instead.
