Q: I am researching colleges and I was wondering which ones in california offer Doctoral Degrees in Psychology?
I am researching colleges and I was wondering which ones in california offer Doctoral Degrees in Psychology

A: Check the University of California graduate schools. UC Santa Cruz has a program and so does Irvine. There are a few more but you may want to research it

Q: Does anyone have information about programs for teachers to get masters and doctoral degrees in 1 - 4 yrs?
I've heard many people mention such a program but I am trying to locate one in Georgia that would allow me to get a master's and doctoral in less than five years. Any information is greatly appreciated.

A: Receiving a Masters in Education and / or a Doctoral Degree in Education within 1 - 4 years is actually quite standard. A Masters Program can typically be accomplished in a year, maybe more if you cannot attend full time residency. A Doctoral Program typically runs 3 - 5 years, but you could do it in four or less, again, depending on your circumstances. If you want to complete both degrees within four years, that would be a feat and would take a lot of focus and dedication on your part. Here are some schools you might consider for the degrees: University of Georgia Walden University (On-Line) Georgia State University The Bagwell College of Education at Kennesaw State University

Q: Should Masteral and doctoral degrees in engneering be offered only to licensed Engineers?
pls state if you are in the affirmative side or in the negative sidea and please give your views/ideas..i'm soliciting ideas for my class. tnx!

A: In my state, after you get a BE you qualify to take the Engineer in Training (EIT) test. You can then work as an engineer in training for a minimum of 5 years. After 5 years you can qualify to take the Professional Engineer test. If you pass that, you can advertise yourself as an engineer. There's no reason why you shouldn't be able to go straight through school to an ME. You just can't say your an engineer.

Q: What is the difference between doctoral, masters and undergraduate degree?
Hi, I was looking at some subjetcs at universities, particularly comparing McGill and York University. I noticed that McGill has more Masters and Doctoral Degrees in certain fields. What do these degrees do for you? Also, would you rather recommend Mcgill or York for engineering-not sure which kind but probably mechanical, electrical, automotive or computer

A: The bachelor's generally gives you some basic knowledge in a field - in a career-oriented major, this would mean you would be ready for an entry-level job in the field. In one of the liberal arts, you would be considered reasonably educated in the subject matter. The master's degree, which you get following an extra year or two of study after completing a bachelor's degree, usually focuses completely on the subject matter of the degree (in a bachelor's degree program, less than half the courses you take will be in your major, with the others intended to give you a general education), making you a "master" of the subject. Usually you have to do some kind of a major project, like a thesis, at the end of a master's degree. The doctorate is intended to bring you to the point where you are not only learning from, but are also contributing to, the discipline. For example, if you are getting a doctorate in engineering, you aren't just reading what others have discovered about history, but you are doing your own research to add to the body of knowledge about engineering. The dissertation, which is a major research project at the end of the doctoral degree, differs from the master's thesis not only in length, but because you are expected to make an original contribution to the field with the findings of your research.

Q: what is a professional degree and what is a doctoral degree?
do i need a bachelors degree to get a professional degree? how do i get a professional degree? how do i get a doctoral degree? can i get both doctoral degree and a professional degree at the same time?

A: Professional degrees include degrees in medicine, law, optometry, etc. Yes, you need a bachelors degree before you can apply for these programs, with very few exceptions. Get a bachelors degree and take the entrance exams (MCAT, LSAT, etc) to apply. Doctoral degrees are the highest degree in a field, and are research degrees. If you get an MD, you can treat patients. If you get a PhD in medicine, you're doing research. While professional degrees take 3-4 years depending on the degree, the doctoral takes a different amount of time depending on the person, and is usually 4-8 years after the bachelors degree. Getting both at the same time will likely prove impossible. First, I don't know of any programs that would allow you to enroll in another at the same time. Second, any one of these programs is more demanding than a full-time job. You wouldn't have the time to do both.

Q: How many years does it take to get a doctoral degree?
I'm currently a freshman in high school and now thinking about what i want to do for the rest of my life. I chose to be an astronomer. It requires a doctoral degree, and i was wondering how many years of college it will take. I'm in all honors courses with above average grades.

A: It could depend - but is usually 4 of College (which could be finished sooner with heavy course loads and summer and interim break courses) then 3-4 of Grad School. Go for it!!

Q: How many years does it take to recieve your doctoral degree?
i want to be a psychologist. well, i need a doctoral degree to be one. so can you please include details and what not about it. i really want to go to UCLA. that would be awesome. p.s. i am in honors courses, and i am a freshman. my grades are rising and above average at the moment.

A: I am a PhD and have taught, researched and had a private practice as well as hospital privileges and I laud your determination to enter the field of psychology. The real pooh bahs in psych are the psychiatrists, however, they depend on the psychologist to create a picture of a patient they use to help complete a puzzle so treatment can be recommended to the treatment team. If you are fortunate you may be in charge of a psych or alcohol/drug recovery unit and you will be the pooh bah even the RN' psych nurses and regular doctor staff look to for psychological decisions. these might include hospitalization, drug treatment, modality of therapy suggested, and leading the treatment team in a weekly conference about patients in your care. Unless you are going to be a pure scientist and stick to research, I suggest undergrad at UCLA and graduate level work at one of the counseling schools such as International IU or California institute. UCLA is a fine school for teaching research for the PhD bujt if you want to be a therapist, get right in there and start working with patients such as in a college setting. Of course you aren't going to get a patient of your own for awhile but what you learn in group or individual sessions can help you remarkably. Some Students have found almost immediately that they cannot deal with what is revealed through counseling and drop out. Usually it is because they have similar issues as the patient that are unresolved. Some get into therapy themselves and return and have great success. the PhD is about three years of intensive research and a dissertation and takes about three years. More if your PhD doesnt contain the rigid research they are looking for, or you made someone in the committee mad, or you didnt do well in a class you taught to the freshman level psych classes, the students loved you but your advisor has you pegged as someone that reminds him of his aunt and he hated that aunt, so you're it! I loved every minute of my work in psychology. I had a great internship and my advisor was fantastic. Do not go into social work, they wil try to recruit you dont do it. Even a doctor in social work will get a smirk from a group of masters level counselors. Once you have the PhD, though you are treated like the doctor you are, and medical doctors will respect you as colleagues, I use to run the weekly treatment team meeting at a hospital all the staff got together and discussed each patient. The only downside for me was the loss when a patient does a successful suicide, in alcohol and drug treatment there are a lot of them..and for me it was very tough. And psychologists have a high suicide rate but the ones that do it are usually not part of a team and get depressed and see no end of it and check out. By the way, I got a teaching credential at UCLA. Great school. -peace- captjack7@sbcglobal.net

Q: What is the difference in a doctoral degree in physical therapy and a doctorate?
Would you call someone who got their doctoral degree in phys therapy Doctor?

A: Coach makes a very educated and appropriate answer. Doctor comes from the word "teacher" in Latin...the AMA's attempt to control the use of the word doctor to imply only medical doctors is ludicrous because they've stolen in from teachers! The DPT is a doctoral degree and requires about 7 or 7 1/2 years of education. This is an entry level clinical degree and should not be confused with a PhD. It is certainly acceptable to call someone with a DPT "doctor," but it's not common practice to do so. I use my first name as mentioned by someone above. However, those PTs who've gone onto a PhD (different than a DPT) have established themselves in a very specific area of rehab medicine and have completed a doctoral dissertation...I would be more apt to call someone with this status "Dr"...especially in an academic setting.

Q: How do i become a nurse with a doctoral degree?
I wanna be a nurse (maybe specialize in midwifery,or pediatrics)but have my masters and earn atleast $79,000 a year....how could I do this....If I get my doctoral degree what would that mean...what would I do...would it be simular to a masters....help! I'm only a freshman in highschool but i want to be certain of my career. Please help! The more information the better! Thank you ! BYE!

A: You need a BSN (to be a nurse) and a MSN (to get a masters). If you think you want to be a nurse, volunteer at a hospital first. It's not all tea and crumpets, I assure you. Also, you have to be a science and math wiz. Is that the case?

Q: What school offers a distance learning in the Doctoral Degree in Education Major in Psychology and Guidance?
What school is offering a distance doctoral degree program in Education Major in Psychology and Guidance?

A: Ph.D programs are normally not offered on-line, due to the intensity of study. Besides, its better to go to a "brick and mortar" institution, as opposed to cyber-u.

Q: how long does it take to become a physical therapist?I need a Masters or Doctoral Degree?
I am 24 years old about to be 25 in September. I would like to change careers and become a PT or a physical Therapists Assistant. I would like to know how long that will take me How long to get a masters or doctoral degree.

A: It will depend on if you have any college experience. If you have none, expect it to take 6-7 years to become a PT if you go to school full time. To become a PTA would take 2 years. If you have some college experience, but have not completed the prerequisite coureses, this could take you 1-2 years to complete if you already have your gen eds complete. Then you would apply for admission to the graduate level phase which is typically another 3 years.

Q: Masters/Doctoral Degrees in Humanistic or I/O Psych?
I'm having a hard time finding a good, reputable graduate school for Industrial/Organization psychology. I want to study that or Humanistic Theory, but primarily I/O Psychology. Can someone help me out with a list of colleges that have good programs for a masters and doctoral degree? Thanks so much!

A: You asked this question twice: More specifically, go to this link: http://www.siop.org/gtp/gtplookup.asp

Q: What age do you think is a"good" age to start a Doctoral degree?
I am 26 , but I think that I should get more Job experience before a Doctoral degree, what do you think?

A: It depend on what Doctoral are you looking at, if it is research doctoral like biology, biochemistry, then work experience probably won't make a difference. But if you plan to go to public health, public policy, management where experience is critical in gaining admission then work experience might help you. If you already know a doctoral degree is what you want, go for it now.

Q: Do you need to get a masters degree before you can get a doctoral degree?
I was looking at information for a forensic psychology degree for a college. It said you can apply for both doctoral program and the masters program at the same time. Doctoral you get a PhD, the masters you get a MA. i'm not sure if i need to get a masters first or if i can choose to get a PhD and skip the MA. Does anyone know?

A: The way that works is you'll spend the first two years taking graduate classes and writing a thesis regardless of which program you go for. After you finish, you would graduate (masters program) or in the case of the doctoral program the masters is just given to you as an intermediary degree (this allows you to be a full lecturer instead of just a teaching assistant) The doctoral program student would then continue the next 2-3 years concentrating on their dissertation and comprehensive exams.
