Q: Online degree - Distance learning -What are the most legitimate?
I'm already successful at what I do but I want to pursue a degree in either Political Science or Criminal Justice.
What are the top schools for distance learning that are legitimate? Even if I eventually wanted to get a masters. Phoenix and school like it seem VERY VERY cheezy.
Any suggestions?
A: The key is to make sure the college/university is accredited. I have three basic recommendations for everyone looking into online/distance education. They all have to do with exploring; after all, you have to defend your assets.
1. Make certain that you have triple checked their accreditation. First, they tell you what it is, then you go to that accrediting body’s website (not through the link provided by the school), and thirdly you would visit the department of education to see what they have to say. Do your diligent research into the institutions once you have narrowed down to a couple. You can look at the Better Business Bureau for more information on the college.
2. You must have extreme self motivation and be able to teach yourself per say. This means that you will not have someone telling you verbally, so it is up to you to get the information from the course room, text, and other resources. The best way to look at it is like a guided independent study course.
3. Review your goals, personal and professional. Make sure that the school that you are going to offers the programs that match your goals. Do not settle. There are many programs that are similar, but you have to make the ultimate decision. Do not let it be based on finances and length of program, but the fact that when you are finished or near finished you will be able to assume your proper place in the career field sought.
You should market yourself and not the degree or university. There are many traditional universities offering degrees that can be earned through online methods. Distance Learning Alliance has a list of these traditional online schools. Look at that if you are truly concerned with the name of the school. Good luck on your search!
Q: I am trying to decide on the final optional subject for my distance learning degree, and I cant make up my mind?
The options are:
Criminology, Family Law, International Protection of Human Rights, Intellectual Property, Introduction to Islamic Law.
Though I am genuinely interested in all, Intellectual Property law seems to be a good choice for career prospects, Im not that interested in it but dont know if I should leave it out. Can I do a subject I enjoy and then take a course in IP law later?
A: IP is good career wise, but fairly difficult, often dull and not a good choice unless you're particularly interested in it. I presume you've already taken your seven 'foundation subjects': tort, criminal, constitutional, equity, EU, land, contract (family law is not a foundation subject, despite what's written above).
If you have, and you're thinking of the LPC next year, then do something you're interested in, rather than something you think will enhance career prospects. One module in it doesn't make much difference either way to your employability: getting a good overall grade does
Q: can anything be done about the amount to pay for a distance learning degree?
i have to pay £7500 for the course
£50 per exam (18)
£75 to travel to the 6hrs to the exam centre (im in cornwall-exams in london)
and £150 to stay in a hotel (because exams are in the morning)
is this acceptable?can anything be done?
A: Other than seeing if they have some sort of financial aid, I think they get to call the shots and you can take it or leave it. Not fair, but when you own the ballfield, you get to say how the game is played. I think it's pretty nervy to charge this much for distance learning, where they don't have to provide classroom space or other facilities.
Q: How does a distance learning degree relates to goals ?
A: You need to figure out what you want to do and pick the best program for yourself. However there is a lot of self study involved so if it you don't have the discipline to focus on the assignments I'd pass on this type of education.
Q: I was wondering what kind of business degree I should focus on. I want to also do distance learning- Which one
I know now that I want a degree in business but there are so many... Which one should I pick? I work in the cellular industry and am in retail managment currently but I am interested in moving up into a different position. I would like to be involved with operations and planning in the business- more like an Area manager or something along those lines.
I am also wanting to complete my degree using distance learning and need advice on which to choose for that.
Thanks for your help!
A: If you want to go to school in an online program, I don't really see any issue with that. However, you want to make sure that the program you're in is an extension of a brick and mortar campus. When I say campus, I don't mean a few strip mall store spaces. I mean an actual campus with dorms, athletic teams, etc. That's pretty important. There are plenty of distance programs that are legit. Just make sure that whatever program you're studying is at least regionally accredited. You should be fine.
Q: I want to pursue a degree in Nutrition. Should I pursue a degree via distance learning or on campus?
Eastern Michigan University and Kaplan University offers a Bachelor's Degree in Nutrition, and other online colleges offer Master's, and even PHD degrees. It would save me the cost of transportation and living expenses, and I have been homeschooled over a cyber school, so I'm used to the whole online thing. The distance learning program requires real world experience in the field, so I would be doing hands on work as well. However, I don't know how jobs would view a distant learning degree and if they would still hire me as readily.
A: Do some research. Find 10 places that would employ nutritionists and call and ask them how they regard distance learning and employability. My guess is E Michigan would be higher rated than a place that is distance only but that is just a guess. One possibility would be to see if you can do a combo of on campus and distace such as summer on campus or one or 2 quaters on campus.
Anotehr factor is whether having an on campus, group learning vs individually paced experience some of the time and being on your own there may be important to you personally, socially, emtionally, etc. or if you would prefer not to be away from home. A sub factor here is what other interpersonal interactions you have wth different types of people since you wll deal w/ a diversity of ppl in most work.
Q: Can I get U.S. fed student loans for a distance learning degree through a canadian college?
The best choice for the degree program I would like is a Canadian school. Would I be still be able to get a student loan?
I am a Michigan resident and a U.S. citizen but this Canadian school has the best degree program for my needs.
A: I had an american citizen ask this about the college that I work at. Apparently the college (Like ones in the US) has to be approved for federal loans. If the school you want to go to is approved, then you will have to find out if the distance education program is eligible for funding.
If the school is not approved, you can approach them and ask them to go through the approval process but it takes time (and often costs the school financially) and they may not be willing to do it.
Q: where to find affordable distance learning for Master degree in Environmental anthropology or something close?
I have a master degree in environmental management with natural science background. I would like to have more knowledge on social science research methodology, in specific in environmental cases.
I want to take distance learning courses, doesn't have to be master degree, could be short courses. I have been looking at UK, because they offer shorter period of time to achieve master degree. But the cost are very high. Do you know which institution provide such courses in affordable cost?
A: Phoenix Arizona has one.
Q: IS Distance learning 3 yrs. Degree Course, eligibility for a full time MBA?
Hi I am a student seeking admission in First Year Degree programme. I can't do full time degree since I secured low percentage 65% in HSC & MS University in Baroda doesn't allow for lower percentage. Do suggest me your views if I'd be eligible for a full time MBA after finishing my Distance learning degree..... Also, if I can apply for CAT/MAT/XAT??
A: check out this site may be you can find some help here

Q: Does anyone know if there is a university in the UK that offers photography degree's via distance learning?
I have checked out the open university, they offer an 'open' degree - but im trying to pind somthing more specific like a BA Honours Digital Photography . Cant seem to find anywhere that offers that degree or similar via distance learning. Anyone got any ideas?
A: I don't think there is one !
BA(Hons) Photography is the art based degree in photography, not the commercial course. The course has content which I feel sure does not lend itself to distance learning.
The best you could do perhaps is to do the parts of the course and once you have about eight modules under your belt decide on the direction you want to go.
Ask yourself : do I want to be an artist or a commercial photographer?
Q: I'm planning on taking a Master degree via distance learning, what do you think?
I found a nice MSc at an accredited UK university that is available via distance learning, I do believe a MSc can improve my skills and increase my chances of a better job. Someone told me that degrees via distance learning are not considered as real degrees?? is this true? Please advice.
The university assured me that I will receive exactly the same degree as the on-campus study, are you really sure guys that it is less important?
A: Here's my take on it. I attend a "regular" university but they offer quite a few courses on line. I have taken approximately half of my courses on line. I find them to be far less effective. I find I don't learn nearly as much as I do in class. It seems with the on line classes, you are basically teaching yourself. You need to be dedicated and self motivated to make sure you do the work. If you are good at reading and learning in that manner, then go for it.
Q: fashion design degree based on distance learning?
I am interested in taking a fashion design degree based on distance learning. Could any one please advise me on colleges or universities that may offer this kind of degree. Please note that I am based in Dubai.
A: Are you sure you need a degree? There are many courses, but not so many degrees, as you can see here:

Q: Has Anybody got a Distance Learning Degree from Embry Riddle Aeronautical University? Was it Worth it?
And what did you think the degree did for your Career?
A: My husband is in the process of doing that right now and he has friends who have done that. From my understanding, Embry Riddle has a nationally well-known program and having that degree (or any aviation degree) will improve your career, whether you're a mechanic or a manager.

Q: Distance learning/online degree program resources: are there any decent ones?
I've been looking around, and have had very little luck in finding any sort of resource for finding out what universities offer distance learning degree programs, esp. in the sciences. Most of them seem to be firmly in the pockets of the big online degree mills, such as Phoenix and Strayer Universities, and have been of no real use.
Do to my professional career, the more traditional degree programs just aren't an option, and so far have only found one university in the US that offers a BS in Mathematics via distance learning (Chadron State College), so posting here in hopes someone can either direct me to a good search engine for this, or perhaps even give pointers to specific universities.
A: There are some that aren't completely advertising supported by the for profits.
Program search engine: Peterson's http://www.petersons.com/distancelearning/code/search.asp and USNews http://www.usnews.com/directories/e-learning
Discussion boards: Degreeinfo - http://forums.degreeinfo.com/ and Degree Discussion - http://www.degreediscussion.com/forums/
Ratings and "Best Buys" - Geteducated.com http://www.geteducated.com/
News etc. - eLerning Pundit http://www.elearningpundit.com/
Note: UoP, Strayer, etc. are not "degree mills" - a degree mill is a different animal altogether. These for profits may not be the best academics out there but they're far better than the true degree mills.
For math take a look at (in addition to Chadron State):
Ellis College - NYIT
SUNY - Empire State
Northern Arizona U
St Mary of the Woods
U Illinois - Springfield
U Illinois - Urbana
Math just isn't one of those areas a lot of people are clamoring to study online.
