Q: What is the difference between Majors, Minors, and Degree Programs?
When I visited a prospective college's website, I got confused. I know the difference between Undergraduate and Graduate, but that's about all I know (Undergraduate is Bachelor's Degrees and Graduate is Masters and PhD's). Here's the confusing part:
When I chose to view a list of Undergraduate Majors, I could then choose Minors or Degree Programs.
I'm confused about what they all are and how they differ.
A: Petty good answers so far. But, you'll still take the same number of classes whether you minor or not; you'll just fill what would have been a minor with electives. A bachelor's degree requires about 120 hours either way you go.
Degree program: All of the courses required to get a degree from the college. The BS in Biology and the BA in English are degree programs. "Bachelor of Business Administration" is a degree program that has a major of "Business Administration".
Major: The concentration or specialization of your studies. Majors tend to equal about 50 semester hours or roughly half of the degree in a liberal arts program and close to 90 semester hours (3/4 of the degree) in professional programs. The rest of the courses you ask? General education and core liberal arts that everyone takes like literature, math, science, social sciences, etc... Everyone eventually picks a major but it's possible to major in "liberal arts", "general studies", "humanities" also - very wide degrees with little occupational application.
Minor: a secondary specialization following a specific path. They usually require 18-21 hours of classes (6-8 classes) as compared to the nearly 20 or more classes a major requires. Some majors require a minor, most don't. Most people pick a minor that 1) is something they want to learn about but can't justify getting a whole degree in (mine was 'theatrical costume design and construction'; not something there are a lot of jobs in) 2) something that enhances their major's job prospects (such as an accounting major with a finance minor or a science major with a tech writing minor; hoping to become more employable or qualify for grad school).
Some pick a minor by default. I've known a lot of people that changed majors after completing enough courses in their original major to have a minor. My wife changed her major from Literature to Communication after three years as an English major -- she obviously had already completed an entire English minor by then.
Q: Can anyone tell me where there is a list of bachelor degree programs?
I am looking for a list of bachelor degree programs for online schools and schools within 100 miles from my location, which is Teague, TX. I'm lazy and don't want to have to search zillions of different websites to find this info. If someone has an idea or a website to visit, please let me know!
A: You can get a list of all schools in Texas on Yahoo! Education, and the College Board website may be able to help you too (www.collegeboard.com).
Q: What colleges/universities have these graduate degree programs?
I'm looking for colleges that offe graduate degree programs in the areas listed below. I'm looking for schools in the USA. Please and Thank you.
Zoology
Environmental Management
Wildlife Management
Conservation Biology
Wilflife Biology
A: Ohio State university in Columbus Ohio
University of Maine
Q: What is the difference between Degree programs and Certificate programs?
I want to be a Dental Lab Technician and my local community college offers two options:
Degree program & Certificate program
Which one should I go for? What's better? Difference?
http://catalog.lacitycollege.edu/pages/dental%20tech.htm
A: a degree is much better...the certificate is just like i dont even know how to explain it much but just know its certificate then associates then bachelors....certificate is the lowest its just relly saying "youve done the very very basic" 100% go with a degree especially in that feild
Q: What are some of the joint JD + other degree programs are there, And where are those located?
What are some of the joint JD + other degree programs are there, And where are those located?
Leave out MBA/J.D.
A: Almost every law school is associated with larger university system. I'm applying to law schools right now and have yet to find a school that does NOT offer some sort of joint degree. Depends on the school system, but there are M.A.'s in pretty much everything as well as M.D., public policy (M.PA, or M.PP), etc... You've really got to look at what law school you want to go to and go from there. Keep in mind you've got to pay tuition for both schools (JD + grad school), so it will get very pricey. Good Luck!
Q: Can you do two master degree programs at the same time?
I would like to go to grad school in many years to come... I woul like to do journalism and forensic science. Can you do Columbia's dual degree program with Science Po for a Master's and The University of Florida's Forensic Science online for a MS? Is this possible? Thanks!
A: I'm not sure but mostly you will not be able to. Unless the school is jointed. Most schools want you to focus one thing at a time, especially Ivys. If you are doing it for the money, then I can see why. But I would choose only 1. If you want to do it for the knowledge, get a Bach in one and master in the other.
Q: What do university committees look for when considering candidates for master's degree programs in psychology?
I want to pursue my master's degree in counseling and applied psychology. Problem is I was a sociology and french (double) major in college. I have already spoken to a professor at the university where I will be applying. He gave me the guidelines of the prerequisites for that area of study.
I have already signed up for undergrad courses to make sure I meet the requirements and I am currently studying for the GRE's. I want to know how I can make my application stand out.
What else can I do to improve my application? Is the master's program similar to the undergrad insuch that university committees expect to see lots of extra activities listed on the application?
What do committees look for when considering candidates for master's degree programs especially in psychology? I would appreciate all answers but especially those from psychology professors and psychology grad students.
Thanks!
I am currently in a position where I own my own home, work full time, and have 2 kids. I serve on several committees at work (I work in a public school). I have always gotten good grades and have always proven to be responsible. I am getting this degree so that I can pursue the career that I want.
A: I also will be getting my MS or MA in Psychology, depending on which direction I want to take. My advisor as an undergrad suggested I look into the work/research of a particular faculty member with whom I would want to work. Then, in my admissions letter, refer to that faculty member's work/research. Graduate admissions want to know that you want to be there and will be interested in what the grad department does.
Q: Is it possible to do two Bachelor degree programs at the same time?
I mean, I'm already in my 4th semester for my current program, can I apply for ANOTHER degree program (not in my University)?
A: Yes, people have already said it's called a Double Major which I know quite a few people doing. Now...you said, "ANOTHER degree program (not in my University)". Are you talking about going to another school or another entity in your current school? If you plan on staying at the same physical location then sure, go for it. If you plan on doing two degrees in two locations then you'll only receive aid for one school, pay out of pocket for the other, and be considered a transfer student. So that would be crazy.
Q: What universities in California offer good Pharm D. degree programs?
I'm going to be a senior soon and will be applying but I am not to sure which universities i should apply to to get a Pharm D. degree. I don't want to have to apply some where and then have to transfer so I want to go somewhere where they offer a good Pharm D. degree program...Any help would be greatly appreciated....
A: University of the Pacific has a good pharmacy department. Here's their website: http://web.pacific.edu/
Q: what are some dual degree programs involving either a Ph.D. or masters in psychology?
I would like to see a site with all the existing dual degree graduate programs? Are there any sites that one should visit? is there someone who i can speak to who can help me figure out the most appropriate dual degree programs?
A: neuropsychology is a VERY eclectic degree.
I've found that you're not going to find a website with that info to begin with because the programs vary from university to university.
Question is...what do you want to do? What are you interested in....and then start to specialize in that - by definition of a Ph.D. - YOU - will have made a contribution to the field of science when you are awarded it - so you can specialize as much as you want.
There are also "interdisciplinary" degrees as well - a degree program where it is a combination of religious studies and psychology for example. That depends on the university you're going to - what interdisciplinary degree you can get.
Best advice: Figure out in general what you want to learn, then go to the schools and figure out what school you want to go to, and then start learning and start tailoring your education around your desires and work with a guidance counselor.
My specialty? Psychosocial addictions in criminal minds - I'm studying rehabilitation, but I am specializing in prevention and causes - I used to be a police officer and now I'm working backwards to the causes.
You'll find you do a lot of exploration while you're in school.
Q: Canadian Universities - Joint Psych and Law degree programs?
Who knows of any programs that offer a joint Psych and Law degree that is offered by a
CANADIAN UNIVERSITY.
I can't afford to go down to the states.
A: U try University of Toronto? or Queens?
Q: Are accelerated BA degree programs equally accepted?
I plan to finish my BA degree at Biola U through their adult degree completion program. I have the GE requirements done through various universities. A neighbor of mine told me people who go this route don't learn as much as someone in a 4 year program. She said employers are not accepting these accelerated degrees as valid. She says I am throwing my money away to end up being uneducated. Her thinking is that one can not learn the material in 5 weeks that another program spends 8-10 weeks on. My classes are scheduled one day a week for 4 hours. I think it's in how the person learns. One person can take it all in and learn the material in this format while another may not be able to do this. What do you think?
A: Yes, they can be equally accepted. It depends on the school and their accredidation. Do some checking into the school itself. If I can remember the site I had for doing just this I'll post again later.
Q: What degree programs have gotten the most job placements in 2008?
I am doing a midlife career change and hope to finish a degree in the next two years. I was previously in engineering, (A long long time ago.) but am willing to adjust. My current/ previous career has been too unstable for too long.
A: They say 'if you love what you do, you'll never have to work a day in your life' -- to go with one's passion.
General career info: http://www.bls.gov/oco and can search 'teachers' or whatever other career piques one's interest.
Please steer clear of online, for profit schools such as university of phoenix, strayer and others as they are merely out to 'make a profit': http://www.uopsucks.com
http://www.ripoffreport.com has many posts about university of phoenix and other online, for profit schools. Can just type into search.

Q: undergraduate degree programs for working adults?
Hi,
Does anyone know whether colleges in the NY metro area ( ie Rutgers, CUNY, NYU, etc ) have undergraduate degree programs for working adults? I graduated with a BS 5 years ago and would like to get a BA in mathematics. It would be nice if colleges offered degree programs with classes in the evening and on weekends. TIA.
A: I know for a fact that Columbia University does http://www.gs.columbia.edu/home.asp. It is among the best if not the best for adult undergraduate education in the country. I suspect that almost all the schools in the NYC metro area have programs for adults. Investigate the programs carefully, because some may be better than others. Look at how many years the program has been offered. Look at the faculty. Be certain that you will have the opportunity to work with experienced professors, and not just teaching assistants.
Good luck!
Q: What colleges, if any have degree programs for becoming a wedding consultant?
I am 18 and going to a community college in El Paso right now but I really want to go right into what I want to do, which is being a wedding consultant. I know of some certification programs but I'd like to find one in the San Antonio area. If anyone has any information or has any advice please let me know! Thanks :)
