Q: how can you tell which masters accounting degrees are better than others?
a friend of mine is looking at accounting graduate schools and there are a couple different degrees she can get and I want to know which are more respectable

A: In general, you want to look for AACSB accreditation applicable for accounting programs. You can visit their website and get a list of these institutions. Beyond that, I would look into internship possibilities. See what schools have relationships with whom. Some are a lot better than others and this isn't really reflected in any kind of accreditation or survey.

Q: Why are alot of people getting degrees with nothing to do with accounting and then deciding to be accountants?
I have heard about alot of people recently finishing degrees in subjects such as biochemistry and history and then applying to work at an accountancy firm to become an accountant. Why are these people not just getting jobs to do with their degrees or doing an accounting degree in the first place?

A: They think accounting job is easy. Look, where on earth can you find such a job? Another reason is that their high school result sucks, that's why they can't study accounting. So they studied history and biochemistry. I bet they can't find a job in the accounting firm. They don't even have the qualification, who on earth will hire them? They must have an accounting degree, with 3 years of relevant experience plus a CA or CPA to even get into the interview room!

Q: How hard is it to get an Accounting degree? versus other degrees?
I was told I cannot do it.... In other words my colleage said .... "oh... no....YOU wouldn't like it...it would be too hard for you..? just curious what she meant when she told me that, right after I told her I was interested in Accounting as my major?

A: First of all, don't be discouraged by your colleague, if you put your mind to being an Accounting major, you can do it. A few qualities that may help you become successful as an Accounting major are: 1) Comfortable with numbers - you will deal with it A LOT 2) Detail-oriented - you need to be accurate in your work and be able to spot mistakes 3) Good at memorizing things - some things about accounting are not necessarily intuitive.. you just have to memorize them

Q: What is the difference between Accounting and Economics degrees?
What is the difference between Accounting and Economics degrees? - I'm an economics major..but i hear that accounting majors take many of the same classes as I do. I also hear that economics majors can get the same jobs as accounting majors.... is this true? if this is true, that would be great because you always see ads that say "accountants needed", but not really "economist needed".

A: My BA is in Economics. There are three type of studied of money. 1) Economics is the big picture. A) Microeconomics; looks at industries and the total cost and profits like Restaurant, Retails, and specific business. B) Macroeconomics looks at the all the total profits for all business in one city, country, or the whole world. 2) Accounting is an offshoot of Economics, it look at a small picture. It looks at individual cost account like trucks, rent, and taxes. 3) Finance look at the middle picture. The financer looks at the all expenses, all purchase, and all profits. My advise to you is to get a degree in Finance. If you want to be an Economist you need a PhD. Accounting is great too. Economic was a great major, but really did not take me so far. Accounting and Finance are a lot harder then Economic, but you will make more and get better job.

Q: Do this two- Engineer+Accounting MBA- degrees work?
I have an engineering degree (BSME) and would like to get an MBA in accounting. Would that be a good idea or should I just rather pursue a master's in mecheng or degree in a tech field? Would that help salary-wise?

A: It depends what you want to do. If you want to go into the more business/management side then the MBA is best but if you are looking to be a higher ranking engineer then the masters in engineering would be better.

Q: How is the job market in Los Angeles for grad students of Loyola Marymount University with accounting degrees?

A: Terrible!!!

Q: With my Bachelor degrees in Accounting and Finance?
I have bachelor degrees for both Accounting and Finance. But I just graduated from Cal state Dominguez Hills, CA and I have not yet applied for any intership . Will I be able to look for a job quickly to get experience so that I can apply for CPA exam later on? Cuz I need money rite now

A: Just apply for a job, you don't need an internship. You don't need to have experience to take your CPA, but you need experience to become certified. At least that is in NJ. Good Luck.

Q: Let me know few accredited community colleges in Maryland ,that offer accounting degrees?

A: Montgomery College and then you can transfer to a four year university.

Q: What are jobs that require accounting degrees?

A: An accountant

Q: when i finish school in June 2009 i will have my associates and bachelors degrees in accounting.?
i want to go in the military as an officer in the accounting field. being a female what would be a better branch to choose: air force reserve or air national guard reserve? list website and any other information possible.

A: I'd say either one. When it comes to officers they isn't much of a difference. Just talk to the recruiters for both and see what they offer. Active duty would probably be the way to go because I think they offer more benefits for loan repayment.

Q: About associates degrees in Accounting or finance?
Has anybody ever got and associates degree in accounting or finance? If so, once you got your associates degree did you have a hard time trying to find a job in the accounting or the financial field? Is getting and associates degree worthless in todays world? I have been thinking about transferring to a four year college or university to get a bachelors degree and also to get into and intership.

A: If it is at all possible for you to go on and get your bachelors then you should definitely do it. I am one of those who believes an associates isn't worth much if anything. It should give you a competitive advantage over someone who only has a HS diploma but that is about it. I don't think you can get an associates in a specific discipline like accounting or finance. I think it is more general...for example I think you can only get an associates in "Business". Junior Colleges only offer 100 & 200 level classes. I know there were no finance classes under the 300 level where I went, and only 2 acconting classes on the 200 level.

Q: What jobs can I get with my accounting degree?
I recently graduated from college with a BBA in Accounting. I graduated Cumme Laude(sp?) with a 3.6 gpa. I have found that I no longer have an interest in accounting and am wondering what sort of careers I can get in other fields. I would like to get into psychology and am wondering if I would be able to get into this field without having a degree in it. I am open to the idea going back to school for a masters, but I really need to find a good job, that has the salary and benefits that a college degree provides. Any ideas? I am open to pretty much anything that requires a 4 year degree because I don't want to have wasted the last 4 years. Sources would be great as well. Anyways, thanks for all responses.

A: You'll find out once you start interviewing. A secret that most undergraduatesd don't fully realize is that after getting the first real professional job for advancement the major becomes less important than having the first degree. Ask around, you will find a high percentage of people after 120 or more years out of university working in areas other than what they originally studied.

Q: What kind of jobs can someone with an Accounting degree from a University obtain?
I just want to know the variety of jobs that an Accounting graduates can get either when they just get their degree or when they have 3-5 years experience. I want to see what types of jobs are there in the Accounting field.

A: According to the US Dept of Labor: Others for whom training in accounting is valuable include budget analysts; cost estimators; loan officers; financial analysts and personal financial advisors; tax examiners, collectors, and revenue agents; bill and account collectors; and bookkeeping, accounting, and auditing clerks. Recently, accountants have assumed the role of management analysts and are involved in the design, implementation, and maintenance of accounting software systems. Others who perform similar work include computer programmers, computer software engineers, and computer support specialists and systems administrators. If you stick with accounting, there are 4 major fields of accountants: 1) Public: Public accountants perform a broad range of accounting, auditing, tax, and consulting activities for their clients, which may be corporations, governments, nonprofit organizations, or individuals. 2) Management: Management accountants—also called cost, managerial, industrial, corporate, or private accountants—record and analyze the financial information of the companies for which they work. 3) Government accounting: Government accountants and auditors work in the public sector, maintaining and examining the records of government agencies and auditing private businesses and individuals whose activities are subject to government regulations or taxation. 4) Internal auditing: Internal auditors verify the accuracy of their organization’s internal records and check for mismanagement, waste, or fraud. Internal auditing is an increasingly important area of accounting and auditing. Some specialities: a) Some public accountants specialize in forensic accounting—investigating and interpreting white-collar crimes such as securities fraud and embezzlement, bankruptcies and contract disputes, and other complex and possibly criminal financial transactions, including money laundering by organized criminals. b) Increasingly, accountants also are assuming the role of a personal financial advisor. They not only provide clients with accounting and tax help, but also help them develop personal budgets, manage assets and investments, plan for retirement, and recognize and reduce their exposure to risks. c) The growth of international business also has led to more demand for accounting expertise and services related to international trade and accounting rules, as well as to international mergers and acquisitions. d) Some individuals with backgrounds in accounting and auditing are full-time college and university faculty; others teach part time while working as self-employed accountants or as accountants for private industry or government. What can you advance to? Management accountants often start as cost accountants, junior internal auditors, or trainees for other accounting positions. As they rise through the organization, they may advance to accounting manager, chief cost accountant, budget director, or manager of internal auditing. Some become controllers, treasurers, financial vice presidents, chief financial officers, or corporation presidents. Many senior corporation executives have a background in accounting, internal auditing, or finance. Good luck!

Q: What can I do with an accounting degree besides accounting?
I'm goin to major in accounting. My goal is to work for a federal law enforcement agency in the future as a special agent. I know that competition for these postitions is fierce so, I'd like to know if an accounting degree makes you competitive within the business for other postions. Thanks for the feed back. Thanks for the suggestion I had thought of that too. Any other positions. Would an accounting major make it easier to start my own business if I so choose?

A: Try forensic accounting--it will add to the federal law enforcement interest by being able to trace transactions such as in embezzlement cases.

Q: What is the difference in getting a 2 year degree in Accounting and getting a 4 year degree in Accounting?
Because there is a 2 year Accounting degree at the local community college and then there is the same degree at the local 4 year college. Is there a difference in what you're allowed to do? Is there a difference in salary? Thanks. :)

A: Now what do you think? Do you think people will hire you into a job requiring a Bachelor's Degree just because you gamed them and got an Associate's? Ya think?
