I already have a bachelors degree in Psychology but I am interested in Accounting. If I go back to college would I have to complete an entire 4 year program? Are there any reputable online schools worth looking into?

A: You would have to take the entire sequence of accounting courses that comprise your major but you would not have to take any more general education courses. Some reputable colleges offer some courses online but beware of colleges that are totally online. Be sure to take your accounting degree from a regionally accredited college.

Q: how much math courses are required to get a degree in accounting?
I'm considering on obtaining a degree in Accounting. I'm not strong in math. Would like some input on how much math is required in class in order to obtain a Accounting degree.

A: For an accounting degree, the number of required math courses really depends on the school you go to. Where I went, there were only two required math courses, one was basic calculus and the other was random. While you don't need to know much beyond addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division (and even then we have computers and calculators to do most of the actual work), the ability to understand how the numbers in the income statement or balance sheet relate to each other is very important. In short, math itself is not that important, but understanding the relationships between different elements is.

Q: I have an accounting degree and want to get a masters degree in another field?
I have an accounting degree and want to get a masters degree in another field. What are my options? I don't like the business field anymore. I was thinking of somewhere along the science line? Any professionals out there who know if I will be able to do that?

A: Best bet is to check the admission requirements for the program you're interested in. My guess is that you'd need to go back and take enough science/math to qualify for a B.S., or at least have all the science/math prerequisites.

Q: Should I do a second university degree? I have finished accounting but believe town planning is my passion?
I have completed an accounting degree but find it very boring and dont wanna do it as a career anymore. Should I change and do town planning instead which I beleive is my passion. I am 24 and feel as though I am too old too keep studying and should get a full time job but I hate the career I have chosen and would much rather do town planning. Any advice would be muchly appreciated.

A: I think since you only live once, you should be passionate about what you will be doing for the rest of your life! I think you should get the 2nd degree, so you wont dread to go to work everyday. good luck!

Q: How can I convince a prospective employer that I can do an accounting type job without an accounting degree?
I have my degree in Elementary Education and I don't have any experience in accounting nor my accounting degree, but I know I could easily be a bookkeeper. What skills are employers really looking for in a bookkeeper, accounts payable, etc.? Or do I just need to get my degree? I do have experience creating purchase orders and invoicing...does that help?

A: P.O.'s and invoicing helps with an a/r position. To get experience in an a/p position, someone will have to take a chance on you. Another helpful skill is general ledger. It's all part of book keeping. Throw some payroll in there, and you can get a job without a degree. I did.

Q: Can an Accounting degree help me in starting my own business?
I was just curious to know if an Accounting degree would help me in starting and running my own business. if so how would it help me?

A: It can, from the accounting portion of running a business. I am in an accounting program at our community college.I work for a CPA as an accountant now and I have a home business. Honestly tho, if your looking for a degree to help you with running your business I would get a Business Management degree and ask an advisor on extra accounting courses that will be most beneficial to you.

Q: Will accounting firms look unfavorably on a canditate without an accounting degree?
I have a regular 4 year degree in Business finance and already have 12 hours in accounting. I've been out of school for 5 years. I'm thinking about going back and getting just enough accounting hours to sit for the cpa. I will not have an official accounting degree though, but will have a total of 27 accounting hours. Do you think an accounting firm would look down on this? thanks!

A: It can be pretty good if you work hard. I make almost twice what I did when I started about 7 1/2 years ago.

Q: Should I go to a University in Canada for my accounting degree or stay at home in the United States?
If I was to stay here in the United States to study, I would go for my masters in Accounting (5 years, 150 credit hours) so I would become eligible to take the C.P.A (Certified Public Accountant) exam. Now if I was to go to a University in Canada could I get an education that of the equivalent of the 5 year masters degree in accounting in the United States? Thanks.

A: Hi. I disagree with Emi (sorry). An 'international education' is very valuable in the U.S. and the easiest and most affordable option for Americans is looking north towards Canada. You would probably want to look into obtaining an honors bachelor's degree in Canada first and then entering a masters program either back home or up there. You might want to conduct a search for a region and program of study that appeals to you first --- then contact the accounting department of a school you're interested in to discuss any concerns you have. You wouldn't believe the number of faculty members in Canada who have taught in the States and many other countries (cream of the crop, so to speak), so I would be shocked if you don't get the answers you're looking for by speaking to a professor or department chair directly. Q: What's a good degree to do after an Accounting degree?
I've just completed an Applied Accounting degree, and although I'm now working , I'm still interested in doing another degree. The trouble is I'm interested in all sorts of things, that seem to have nothing to do with each other... Economics degree, History degree or Philosophy degree but what's a good combination with an Accounting degree?

A: After you pass your CPA exam, you may want to pick a specific area of business/industry to focus on. You can look for related education in those areas, like real estate, tax accounting, business law, medical accounting, etc.

Q: Is a banker position at a bank any value to me as I pursue my accounting degree?
I work for a bank and I just started going to college to get an accounting degree. I was wondering if there was any better part time job I can get into. I know internships are very valueable but I have not taken enough classes yet to qualify for one.

A: I guess you mean a bank teller position. A bank teller position will not do anything for your resume, if your career aspirations are accounting. It doesn’t matter that you haven’t taken enough accounting classes, as long as you’ve taken basic Managerial Accounting then you can get a very basic internship. Try doing some basic cost or materials tracking for a small business, the local sandwich shop…mechanic…surf shop…local library… You have to get a start somewhere doing something related to accounting. Every type of business needs some type of accounting. Be sure to learn Advanced MS Excel and try to play with an MS Access database. Set one up with garbage data and see if you can write some insightful queries.

I am a US citizen and I would really like to come to the UK and get a degree in accounting and I was wondering which universities i should be looking at.

A: Obviously the LSE (London School of Economics) is the best but very hard to get into. Lancaster University has a 6* rating of its business school I have a friend who does accounting and finance there. Look it up www.lancs.ac.uk. Good luck

I am currently working on a bachelors degree (accounting). I am also working for a temp agency that specializes in placing employees in the finance/accounting industry. Would it be best for me to stay a temp to get a variety of experience, or take a permanent job if it were to come along?

A: Experience is good. Take either opportunity if you like the offer. . The temp position will likely, but is not guaranteed, to offer a wider variety of exposure to the field and is not as stable an income as a full time position. But, the scheduling flexibility may be easier for you to work around your classes.

Q: other jobs I can do with an accounting degree?
I am almost graduating with an accounting degree. But I don't enjoy accounting and terrify of long work hours. What other jobs can I do with an accounting degree besides being an accountant?

A: An accounting degree gives you a lot of flexibility in choosing jobs. You could try a brokerage firm for a job as financial analyst, or apply with consulting firms. However, it might be best to get a job with a CPA firm and stay with it for a couple of years, because the experience enables you to move to a more advanced position very quickly. For example, you could get a job with a consulting firm and work up to level 3 in two years. Or you could get 2 years experience with a big 4 CPA firm then move to the same consulting firm to a level 5 or 6 position. And if you think only accounting firms have long hours, you may be disappointed. Any job you take will be demanding if you want to succeed at it. Finally, you might try graduate school and get an MBA. That will enable you to move into any area of business and advance to CEO.
