A: Your teachers will tell you exactly what you need the first day. But I always bring a couple pens & pencils, a spiral notebook, an assignment pad, and a folder because you'll probably get a lot of handouts and have to write some stuff down.

Q: How can you get a discount to ship school supplies to Ecuador?
We are non=profit organization but we had no idea it would cost over $500 to ship about 75 to 100 Lbs. of school supplies.

A: I run a project called The Pencil Project. www.thepencilproject.com Shipping is defintely an issue but can you break the big shipment down into about 4 or 5 smaller ones? If you are nonprofit, you can accept donations for shipping. Would a local business sponsor your endeavor? Sometimes they will do it if you can swing a local newspaper to do a small story on the company's generosity. (good PR for them) Someone told me about an "M" bag. Not sure if every post office has them but you may want to check at yours. May be less expensive. A good old bake sale to raise funds? Good luck and God bless you and your endeavors!

A: some districts give you money? wow!!!!!!!!!!! :) Just kidding but each year I do spend upwards of $100 of my own money - I teach high school - not sure how elementary school teachers can afford to buy all they do!

A: The basics. what I bought for 7th grade, but most things are what I needed for 6th. I decided that I wanted to get unused school supplies and send them to children in or out of the country that needed the supplies, Does anyone know a well known organization that I can send the stuff to?

A: Yes!! go to www.schoolonwheels.org they provide volunteering tutoring services for homeless kids and also provide backpacks. They are a small non profit that does not accept gov. funding and so much of their supplies and materials are donated.

Q: How do you personalize your back to school supplies?
How do you personalize your back to school supplies? I am looking for a way to make my notebooks, laptop, folders, binders, etc. personalized. I love DIY and arts and crafts. I really want my school supplies to be original.

A: for the clear pockets in the front and back of your binders, you could make a collage of magazine clippings, you could take strips of different color and patterned paper or stationary and make a cool striped pattern. or you could press some flowers by putting them in between pages of books and use those in your binder pockets, just search the house and be creative with it. you could take a ribbon and glue it to a folder, or weave the ribbon through the hole punches of the folder (if you arent going to use the hole punches) you could also use things like mint tins for paper clips, or old record albums as folders.. that would be cool, find an old record album thing at a yard sale and either just stick papers in it, or cut two of the sides open and find a way to put pockets in it, or maybe elastic so it will stay closed, but you might need to cut it down to size so it wont be bulky in your back pack. you could also use interesting wrapping paper to cover your textbooks.. or maybe you could find an old vintage poster, and cover a text book with that. check out the yard sales, vintage shops if you have any around you.. i found some old super nintendo mario posters in the crawl space under my house hahah so just do some hunting and keep things like concert or movie tickets and use those but make sure that what ever you decide to do.. its sturdy, and you dont have crap hanging off all your stuff, that could fall off or anything like that. you want it to last all year good luck :]
