Q: School counselor?
What are the requirements for being a school counselor? for the past few years i've been changing my mind on career ideas. And I had the idea of being a school counselor a long time ago. But changed my mind because I thought I wasn't good enough, and plus this is going to sound dumb. But i'm so bad with remembering names. And I would hate to make the people feel bad and everything if I mess up on there names. so I need tips, suggestions, requirements, what to expect, etc. please. ^ _ ^ Any info is def. greatfull. oh and i'm eighteen
A: Dude don't become one of those if you are smart go into something better, luckily you don't have to declare a major until your 2nd year of college but you can make more money doing something else. Also getting a doctorate is a long long degree, go into something profitable. unless you really have you mind set on it then go for otherwise i think you should keep your options open.
Q: What's the difference between the school counselor and the school psychologist?
ok i know we have both at my school but like the counselor at my school came to our health class and said we can come to her for "personal issues" whenever we want but i've heard nothing of the school psychologist, i just know we have one....i dont think we're just allowed to go there tho...
does the counselor send you to the psychologist if she thinks you have like really severe problems?
A: What differentiates the two is simply the level of education they've completed. Yes, the psychologist will deal with more serious problems while the counselor will kind of be like that friend who listens to all of your "boy issues".
Q: How much schooling is needed for me to be a School Counselor?
I'm 18, I live in the Kenner/Metairie/New Orleans part of Louisiana, and I think I want to go to school to become a school counselor. But I'm not sure what classes I would need to take or how many years worth of schooling I would need to complete. Can anybody help?
A: In MIssouri, you have to have your BS degree in education, then get a Master's in psychology (educational psychology/ counseling) Before you can get your position as a counselor you have to have a minimum of two (maybe three) years of actual teaching experience.
BS in education usually takes 4.5 years
MS can range in time needed, usually 2
plus the 2 years of teaching experience.
Hope this helps.
Q: Is it legal 4 a school counselor along with CPS to question a student without parental consent?
Our daughter was taken from her class and questioned by her school counselor, who had brought a CPS caseworker in/who actually did the questioning. We had already asked the school counselor to contact us if there ever is a concern, and that all private contact with the school counselor needed our involvement. We are aware of the mandatory reporting laws, but can a child/student actually be put through a CPS interview without parental forewarning?
A: Actually, CPS has more broad power than the police. In the name of child safety and best interest of the child, they can interview anyone they wish about your parenting style and abilities, including your child without your knowledge. In fact, they can even insist on entering your home to inspect it. You can, of course, refuse, but your refusal will be considered as supporting the allegations. Not cooperating with CPS is sufficient enough reason for CPS to go to court and request to have the child taken away from you.
Q: what are the education requirements to become a school counselor in indiana?
I already have a BA in Psychology and I have been contemplating going back to school to become a School Counselor. I don't know where to start or how long it is going to take to get the degree or classes I need, Help Me please.

Q: How much does a middle school counselor make?
What is the average amount a middle school counselor in San Francisco, CA makes in a month?
A: Why do you want do know?
Did you fail the teacher exam ?
Q: Is my school counselor obligated to tell my parents if I am having thoughts of drinking alcohol?
This may seem like an obvious question, but since it's not a self-destructive act, is my school counselor obligated to tell my parents if I tell her that I have had urges to get drunk? It's not like I'm gonna kill anyone or myself...I just want to drink away my problems and anxieties for a while. :/
It's not peer pressure. I would rather drink alone.
A: I am not sure. With any other counselor they are obligated to report you to the authorities if they have knowledge of you doing something illegal. I wouldn't think they could tell your parents much about your case because of confidentiality, and you have just thoughts, you have not actually gotten drunk.
However I am not familiar with laws of school counselors and minors. You should ask the counselor about the confidentiality issues.
Q: Does anyone know how to obtain certification as a guidance or school counselor?
I live in Indiana. I have a Master's degree in clinical psychology and mental health counseling. I want to work in the school system as a counselor, but the jobs I see say that they require a specific school counselor or guidance counselor certification. How do I obtain this? Would I have to go back to school for very long?
A: Here's a good starting point for your research:

Q: What are some questions I can ask my school counselor about stereotypes?
I have to write an article on stereotypes among high school students for a journalism class assignment. For the article I have set up an interview for tomorrow with the freshman counselor to discuss the effect stereotypes have on students at our school. What are some questions that I should ask her during the interview that would help me write a well organized and informative article?
A: Formulate your questions into two categories:
1) Students with stereotypes about other groups. Ask questions about how those students interact with members of different races, religions, gender, etc. Inquire if their preconceived views helps or hinders their school work. For instance, if a student is required to participate in group work, how successful will they be if they use their stereotyped views of others to determine their choice of group members.
2) Students who are members of a stereotypical group. How do these students manage? Go beyond the regular race/religion/gender stereotypes. Ask about goth, geek, jock and eccentric students. How do they cope and do they actually try to perpetuate the stereotype by their dress, actions or opinions?
As a conclusion to your article, examine your own views about groups in your school. Were you surprised by your findings? Have you changed your opinion of different groups of students?
Good luck on your article. This has a lot of potential for a really good assignment.
Q: What are the educational requirements for the State of California to become a school counselor?
I already have my bachelor's degree in Sociology and I was wondering where I would go from here? Types of programs that would be best geared towards becoming a High School or Junior High Counselor for the public and private school systems?
A: You need your masters degree and a pupil personnel services credential.
Apply to a school counseling master's program (found in the department of education). By completing the program, you'll get your degree and the credential you need.
Q: What's the career path to become a high school counselor?
I'm currently studying Psychology, and have 2 semesters left before I'll have my AA in Social Science. Do you need a Masters to become a high school counselor, or just a bachelors?
Thanks for your information!
A: It really depends on what state you live in. For example in California to become a high school counselor you must obtain a Pupil Personnel Services Credential ( PPS), your B.A must be complete before entering a credential program. A masters degree is not an requirement, but most school districts offer a stipend for the masters. Call a local school district or district that you are interested in working for and ask their human resource department for specific details.
Q: How does the whole school counselor thing work...?
I'm having issues with family and whatnot, can I go to my school counselor to talk? Will this be confidential?
Do I need to set up an appointment or something, or do I just walk in and say "I need help!"
Or do school counselors only help with SCHOOL related stuff?
A: To answer your following questions first,
CONFIDENTIALITY: It's important to know that if you meet with a guidance counselor, your conversation will be confidential. The counselor isn't going to go blabbing your personal business around the school. However, there are some cases when a counselor can't keep it confidential — if the counselor thinks that you or someone else is at risk of being harmed. But even then, the counselor would share that information only with people who need to know.
APPOINTMENTS: Your appointment with the counselor could happen during the day when classmates might notice you're gone. What you choose to say about it is your decision. You can just say you had an appointment and leave it at that. You also can say that visiting the counselor doesn't mean you're in trouble.
HELPS: Counselors at some schools also offer programs for parents and kids or just parents alone. The topic could be helping you graduate to middle school or helping you stay away from drugs and alcohol.
A school counselor's job is different from what it was 50 years ago, when a counselor was chiefly concerned with getting students the classes they needed. Today, counselors are called upon to help students in a broader way. They help students handle almost any problem that could get in the way of learning, guide them to productive futures, and try to create a positive environment for everyone at school. So if you need a counselor's advice, just ask!
Hope this helps you a lot. Also have a nice day as well!

Q: How does one become a school counselor?
Hi i have a friend who wants to become a school guidence counselor and she has a few questions.
What kind of education do you need and how long?
What do you major in?
Do you need teaching experience?
What tests do you have to take to be certified?
Thank you for all answers :)
A: Most programs require an undergrad degree in education. You may be able to get away with a psych degree.
The school guidance counselor is a master's level program. Total time = at least 6 years.
If your friend wants to do therapy, then get an MSW.
Q: can a school counselor stop me from dropping a AP class without a contract?
During the school year i signed up for AP US, but now i wish to drop the class and just take regular us history. I asked my counselor and there is a fifty fifty chance that she'll let me drop the class. I havent turned in my ap contract form yet so does the counselor have the authority of me dropping the class?
A: If you want to drop any class, there's nothing the counselor can do about it. The only reason would be if that class was required, but this probably isn't the case here. You can't be forced to take an AP class if you don't want to.
