Q: What subjects are in the syllabus of a 14-year old in a comprehensive school?
How does the curriculum break down in secondary school in England for a 14-year old ?
When i was a kid it was like this:
4 hours maths
4 hours first language
4 hours second language
2 hours third language
2 hours physical education
1 hour swimming
2 hours geography
2 hours history
1 hour physics
1 hour chemistry
2 hours biology
1 hour religious studies or humanitarian studies for those whose parents were not religiously inclined
2 hours Technical Activities (sewing, cooking, ironing, wiring a plug, soldering, technical drawing, etc ...) Boys and girls had to do both.
1 hour art
1 hour music
Just wondering how does that compare to the syllabus of a 14-year old in comprehensive education (in England) today.
And what is the syllabus of 14-year old in school in your country if you don't live in the UK or the US?
Quite interested in Scotland and Wales (or Northern ireland) too though. Just named England because i AM aware it might not be the same in all of the UK
A: When I was a kid it was more or less the same as yours! Im from Scotland!
Nowadays I dont have a clue!
Q: What is the difference between a comprehensive, a grammar school and an a academy?
What is the difference between a comprehensive, a grammar school and an a academy in the UK education system?
A: A comprehensive is a state school providing education for 11-16, and sometimes with a sixth form for up to 18. A grammar school is also a non-fee paying school but you have to pass an exam called an 11-plus to get in. I would like to add- to whoever said that there is more emphasis on academic rather than sport......I see what you mean but not really
I am at a grammar school and I am sick to death of PE- we do it twice a week whatever the weather and lessons are an hour long- and I can't wait until next year when it goes down to one hour a week! Admittedly, there is a lot of emphasis on school work too though, but we do just as much sport as a comprehensive. Also, there is NOT necessarily more middle class- it is anyone from any class who is slightly brighter and can pass the 11 plus. I am certainly not middle class and I don't think there is anyone in my school class who I would say is middle class. Remenber a grammar school is not a fee-paying school- it doesn't matter how much money you have.
An academy is (I think) a boarding school- where you pay fees to go there and stay in term time, only coming home at weekends and school holidays.
Q: Full-Time Comprehensive School Admin Staff Holiday Query?
I work in a comprehensive school and am on a full-time (52 weeks of the year) contract. I am entitled to take 26 days leave a year but have been told that I can only take this time during school holidays (i.e when pupils have their holday). I was just wondering if they are legally allowed to restrict my leave this way and If anyone is in the same predicament?
A: Yes I think they are. In a normal job you apply for leave and they can turn it down within reason.
But they do have to let you take leave.
Q: Where is my schoolmates Pleasant Ville Senior Comprehensive School 1984-1986 clerk typing class?

Q: Is Time 4 Learning a comprehensive home school curriculum? Will it prepare my child for high school?
A: We did it, and I'd say no. It wasn't comprehensive for my fifth grader.
Q: What is the difference between a grammar school, private school and a comprehensive school in the UK.?
A: In the past students took an exam at 12 and if they passed they went to the grammar school to do more difficult courses history, geography, Latin, maths. This would lead to O and A levels.
If they failed they went to the secondary modern where they generally did practical courses and did CSE exams, The system continues in a few places like Buckinghamshire but students all do GCSE's now.
In most places this system was scrapped and replaced by schools who taught everything to everyone (a comprehensive education).
All of the above are government run
Private schools don't exist. I think you mean Public schools are ones which people pay for their children to attend such as Eton, Harrow
Q: Anyone out there go to Blackwood Comprehensive School South Wales?
A: Not I.
Q: How many pupils are typically in a class at comprehensive school? and..?
Are they streamed according to ability?
I only went to a comp very briefly and it was catholic, there were about 20 of us in a class, and we streamed according to ability. I've just read that there are usually 40 or more pupils in a typical class, and they no longer stream? is this true? If it is, that must be nightmare!
This is aimed at the UK btw.
A: This depends on the policy of the school in question. The last school I worked in had three ability groups per year. Although, when I say ability, the groups were mostly composed according to behaviour. This meant that I had one enormous class with 38 higher "ability" pupils, who were easier to manage, and two smaller groups of 20 or so pupils who had difficulties. The idea was that the majority would not then be held back by the "challenging" others. The fact is that these latter two classes were bloody hard work, as not being mixed with calmer, or more disciplined students meant that they began to see their own behaviour as "normal". Plus there were one or two very timid pupils in these groups who were in there due to learning difficulties, who just became more invisible amongst the wild ones. Personally, I think that treating behavioual problems as "ability" ones is wrong. Some of the naughty kids were damned clever. If you're going to stream then you need to have the right criteria.
I'm now out of teaching but I still remember a conversation with a boy whose behaviour in class was really disruptive, but who was really clever. I kept him back one day, and told him I thought he was highly intelligent, and that if he settled down he could do brilliant studies, and have an interesting and well-paid job in the future. He turned to me and said "Yeah, right, OR, I could become a teacher!". He was smarter than me!
Q: what is the best revision website for a student who is currently in comprehensive school?
A: wikipedia.com
answers.com (thats not yahoo answers)
Q: south stanley comprehensive school county durham?
did anyone go to this school between 1984-1989?
A: Ha ha funilly enough my brother in law did, his name was Grant Booth??You know him?
Q: i am in year nine in comprehensive school and are about to take my options what should i take?
i am in year 9 and i want to be a teacher and i know that i need health and social studies but what other lessons would i need apart from welsh english maths religion and all the compulsory stuff ?
A: Hey, I'm in year nine too and have the exact same problem. I have been told that to be a teacher I should take these:
English
Maths
Science
Religion
ICT
Social Studies/Sociology
Child Care/Child Studies
I have been advised to take either Geography, History or a Language also as I have been told this will help in the long run.
Hope that helps :)
Q: what could be the effect of constantly changing course contents in a comprehensive school, for example?
A: Changing the contents of the course can be in 2 ways.
One is keeping the subjects same but revising it as per feedback obtained to make it more interesting and helpful.
This is always friutful.
Second is changing the subjects and topics. This might be done with care. You should make sure that its done gradually. The transition should sail not gallop.
Hope I am clear.
Q: Do you still think about your high school/comprehensive school, sweetheart?
I still fantise about guys I had crushes on years ago? Why?
A: Yes I do my first crush/lust guy. Ohhh but he was to die for. I would have happily lost my virginity to him if my parents and his parents werent so tight on not having us date. I saw his brother 2 months back though. But I went to highschool in the late 90's and alot can change in that time. Besides I love the guy I am with. He is my everything;)
Q: All girls' grammar school or a mixed comprehensive?
We're in the process of deciding where to send our daughter to secondary school next year. At the moment she's fairly flexible about where she wants to go and has a choice of an all girls grammar or two local mixed comprehensives, both with good results though one had an ofsted "notice to improve" a year ago (it's since been given a good rating). I'm not sure about all girls schools - but am confused. I want to do the right thing. Any thoughts/experience??
A: Well it all depends as at a girls school most girls are obsessed with make up and fashion and if a child is not the same as them then they take offence! But at a comp girls and boys interact and the boys show off to the girls etc.... the girls will fancy the boys and you know!!!!
So it is really about what type of perso your child is and whre she would like to go!

Q: Do people from Comprehensive schools have the same chances of getting into Oxbridge than those from private?
Next year, I'm applying for Oxford university, however I'm from a comprehensive school and I've heard there is a lot more chance of you getting an interview if you're from a private/grammar school, is this true?
A: No, the reason that more private students interview at Oxbridge is simply because more apply there. I know lots of people who went to Oxbridge from both state and private schools. As long as you've got good grades and a good personal statement (this is very important - get it looked over by several people) you've got as good as chance as anyone else.
