Q: Are there any post high school military academy prep schools?
My son would love to go to a military academy. He's going to be a senior and so far his grades are just above average. I think that if he does a year of post high school at a military academy college prep school it will increase his chances of getting into an academy. If you do well, they nominate you directly. If not, I believe that it will at the very least allow him to mature, improve his grades and give him the opportunity to get into a better college than he would now. Is this a good plan?

A: Norwich is good, so is Northwestern Prep. There's also New Mexico Military Institute and Marion. He could also apply for the academies - realizing that his grades may need work - with the possibility of being nominated to an official prep school (the Naval Academy Prep School applies to both USNA & USCGA candidates, for example) or a scholarship to one of the above-mentioned prep schools. He could also try for VMI, the Citadel, or even SUNY Maritime.

Q: What do you think of people who go to prep schools?
I go to a private, Christian, prep school. What's your first impression?

A: People who go to prep schools have parents that are willing and able to invest in their secondary education in the hopes that this will make them better prepared for success in college. There are a wide variety of prep schools with a wide variety of students, so it's impossible to fairly generalize on what people who go to prep school are like. Some may be the snobby, spoiled offspring of rich people. But I suspect most are the children of parents who are willing to sacrifice other things to provide their kids with an experience that they think will benefit them. Given the poor record many public school systems have, it's an understandable and commendable choice.

Q: What are the best kind of Prep Schools?
I'm supposed to go to prep school when I get in the 9th grade and I want to know what's the best kind of prep school.

A: Actually, if you have a local college in your town, some of them offer courses for high school students. I live in Alliance, Ohio and Mount Union College offered math courses to AHS students. There is not better college prep school than college itself. Most colleges that offer classes to high school students are liberal arts colleges. I have a BA from Hiram College by the way.

Q: why does everyone think prep schools are stupid?
why does everyone think prep schools are pointless?

A: It kind of depends where you live. I would say that most people think it because it doesn't really gain any kind of advantage today over other schooling. Its somewhat a waste of money if you have perfectly decent public schools available to you. I know kids who went off to prep school because their parents thought they would gain a better college education, etc.. but I ended up getting accepted to colleges that were better.

Q: Do kids who go to prep/ private boarding high schools get arrogant?
Please be fair about the answers. If a kid goes to a boarding/ prep school for the last two years of education, are they likely to become rude and arrogant?

A: I think that rudeness and arrogance are independent of one's education. If you're only talking about the last 2 years I would say that a person who acts rude/arrogant already had those unfortunate traits to begin with. I don't believe that private education 'makes' one arrogant. If you are already arrogant it just gives you one more thing to brag about. If you just want to learn in a very intense environment and do well in college I don't see how it can foster arrogance/rudeness. Hope this helps.

Q: What's a prep school? why do they have one extra year than other schools? ?

Q: Military Academy prep schools?
I am going to apply to the big three Military Academies (AFA, West Point, Naval Academy). I am wondering if you have to apply to the prep schools separately in case you do not get in. Or, when you apply to the academy are you applying to the prep school at the same time?

A: I agree with your other answerer; from the West Point standpoint the same is true. If they feel you need to attend the Prep School, they will send you to it.
