Q: Prep school?
can someone describe an east coast prep school? and suggest the best one?

A: Here's what I got from Wikipedia: "Prep schools are highly selective, academically challenging, and largely independent of state and local controls. The existence of such controls, which are a primary defining characteristic of public, government-operated, elementary and secondary schools, have contributed to the support and growth of prep schools, because these controls are widely viewed by preparatory school proponents as an unacceptable burden on the educational process, and on student outcomes such as university matriculation. Parents of students in the top tier of preparatory schools pay fees that are comparable to tuition at Ivy League universities. Among the principal benefits of preparatory schools is a very low student to teacher ratio, resulting in much smaller class sizes than in most public schools. The tuition money allows the schools to hire highly qualified teachers and to retain them for long tenures. These schools often have significant endowments which finance scholarships that allow for demographic heterogeneity and financial aid. Preparatory schools place a strong emphasis on sports. In many private schools students are required to participate in one or more of the school's sports teams. University-preparatory education is also often associated with the preppy subculture." Personally I think prep schools are awesome, I'm going for my senior year at Berkshire School this fall! Phillips Academy in Andover or Exeter is supposed to be the best but there are so many good ones.

Q: What are the rules of going 2 a prep school post high school to play basketball, before attending college?
I currently play high school basketball and will be graduating in June. My grades right now are probably not good enough for a college scholarship. Can I go to a prep school for a "5th year" before attending a 4 yr college?

A: First find out what your grades are, register with the NCAA clearing house. Take the SAT or the ACT have results sent to clearing house along with GPA. Now once you graduate from high school, your GPA is set and you can only go prep to improve on your SAT or ACT scores and you can take the test as much as possible. If you enroll in a prep school before you graduate like say after your senior season, you may have a chnace to improve your GPA by staying the next year there. but the NCAA has set a limit on how many classes you can use in the 5th year for elgibility thats why the clearing house is important. GPA and Test scores are on a sliding scale, find out where you are on that scale ask your coaches and guidance counselors for help.

Q: How to become a prep school teacher in CA?
I would like to teach from K-8 in a private (prep) school setting. I have a BA in History. How can I get into that field? Do I need more education? And what's the salary range?

A: Private schools pay considerably less than public schools - around $5000-$10,000 a year less. (if you're only making $30,000 when you could be making $40,000 - well - worth thinking about.) Most private schools CAN hire people with only a BA, but PREFER those with more education - MA or even PhD. You may start by looking at any private schools in your area - Catholic schools and whatnot, and see if they need some volunteers or even someone to help in the after school programs. It'll be good if you start working on some education classes at a community college just to have some classes under your belt that are related to teaching.

Q: Would it look better for college if I stay in my public school or go to a good college prep school?
Currently, I go to a great school system. The system offers any AP course you could possibly think of! It also offers IB. I am looking at a college prep school that offers very few APs and no IB program. Would it look to colleges better if I were to take the IB program at my public school or if I go to the college prep school? Also, I am aiming for an Ivy League.

A: go to a good college prep school

Q: Does anyone know the requirements for getting into a service academies prep school?

Q: Is going to a college prep high school really more beneficial then a normal high school?
Well, Im beginning high school next year and my mom is thinking about sending me to a college prep school. The only problem is I dont want to leave all the friends I have now (well, not very many because Im not a dirty little skank like everyone else, but a few of my friends, :]) unless I know it will really be worth it. So, normal high school vs. college prep high school? Any past experience? Thankss :]

A: it rlly makes no difference to be honest. normal high school offers AP [advance placement] courses or IB courses that are college-level. i know people who have gone to normal high schools and have ended up in harvard, cornell and other prestigious colleges. it's your choice don't let your mom decide.

Q: Is it difficult to get into prep school with a bad high school attendence ?
umm im in 12th grade and my grades are decent or average but i have a terrible attendence. so far this year i have about 10 absences and at least 6 latenesses. after 12th grade i plan on going to prep school to get my grades better to get into a good college. But i wanted to know would a prep school accept me considering my bad attendance record ?

A: Yeah. Most prep schools don't look at attendence period. It's more about academics. The school I went to didn't even LOOK at attendence. They wanted report cards and an interview (in which I had to demonstrate 'passion for learning).

Q: where can i buy clothes for prep school?
next year im going to a prep school in new england, and the dresscode is formal (which for girls is pretty much the same as any other school you just can't wear denim and regular tee-shirts and stuff). does anyone know of any stores that might have what i want? price doesn't really matter, as long as it's not super super super expensive.

A: Everyone will look as though they fell out of a J Crew store. Other great brands (STOCK UP!): Vineyard Vines, Lilly Pulitzer, CK Bradley, Vera Bradley, North Face, Ralph Lauren (but not the "Polo Sport" brand). You will want to buy: khackis, chino skirts, oxford shirts, polos, embroidered shorts/skirt, a North Face fleece jacket, a pair of Sperry boatshoes, a few Lilly skirts and dresses, Rainbow flipflops, a CK Bradley tote, and anything and everything from Vineyard Vines! Good Luck!

Q: What is the best SAT prep school in Central New Jersey?
I have been going to a SAT prep school in New Jersey and am happy with the teachers and the price, but not happy with the way the business is run(Too many issues to list). Somebody please tell me the best SAT prep school/center in New Jersey... Middle of NJ if possible. Thank You

A: Try buying a book to help you, it is cheaper, and a better use of your time. The best way to prepare for the SAT is with a guide or book. From my experience, the best preparation books were princeton review guide, and the tutorfox new sat guide. Used together, I increased my SAT score by about 200 points. Good luck, and please let me know if you have any more questions. Regards, Pual.

Q: Prep school basketball : do u have to play high school basketball in order to play prep shcool basketball ?
im a decent basketball player but i didn't make my high school team...I was planning on attending prep school after i graduate this year to get my grades better & to play basketball... but my question is do u have to play high school basketball in order to play prep shcool basketball ?

A: Prep shool is usually a private highschool that costs more than college. You should try out for a community college team or something and transfer if you get really good.

Q: What is the name of this book about a prep school?! (spoilers in question)?
I;m having such a hard time remembering the name. It's about a prep school where weird things happen to the staff and students. It's written from different perspectives. One of the old masters or teachers is set to retire but is terrorized by someone. We find out at the end that the terrorizer was a new teacher at the school. Basically this teacher wanted to be a student at this all boy school as a young age and pretended to be when this teacher was young. She was really poor growing up so she couldn't come here even though her father was the groundskeeper of the school. But when she got older, she decided to teach there as a way to get back at the school that never really accepted her. I think that should jog a few memories. If you need more of a summary, i can offer more. I remember the book vividly but dont remember the name or author. thanks in advance.

A: It's called Gentlemen and Players. It's very good.

Q: on the sims for gamecube how do you send your kids to prep school?
i have the original sims for gamecube, and i've heard that you can send your kid to prep school. if so... how?

A: Send your kids to school happy on any given day with any A grade (A-, A, A+) and when the return they will have gotten into prep school providing you have the money to send them. It will cost $3000 ($1500 each), so make sure you have that saved on the first day so you can get rid of them early. If you don't have the money sell of some of the existing things in the house, as you don't have to maintain a house value here.

Q: Why do people in Darien pretend to be "preppy" when they never went to a prep school and none are in the town?
I noticed a high number of people wearing "preppy" clothes in Darien, CT yet the nearest prep schools are in Greenwich and New Canaan. The rate of high school grads ending up in Ivey League are less than 1% every three years. I went to a Darien high class of 1987 reunion and the most prestigious college (if they went; most hadn't graduated) was Hartwick College in Oneonta, NY which the girl claimed was a little Ivey -- it isn't.

A: okay not true. most people in connecticut dress preppy and there are alot of prep schools around. besides dressing preppy is a popular style. if you look around you will see most people wearing preppy clothes

Q: any regrets sending child to prep school when kinder teacher said emotionally/socially not ready yet?
did you send your child to prep school (aged 5) even when the kinder teacher said they would benefit from another year because of social and emotional immaturity? did they thrive? if you did hold them back as advised, did they improve, make friends easier and not get bored? thanks in advance.

A: I am a preschool teacher and have advised parents to wait on children with fall birthdays, and have children that are not socially/emotionally ready, to hold them back a year. It is better to wait to send them to kindergarten, then to hold them back in the later grades. Children who are not socially ready have a harder time with academics. Kindergarteners have to read now by the end of the year. This is a lot to put on children who are socially/emotionally not there yet. A good teacher will work with the child's strengths, so even if he is ahead academically when you hold him back, the teacher should be able to work with him at his academic level. Just think he will be on the top of his class. Find a school that has a young 5's program, or a good pre-k program, and wait.

Q: Should i Transfer to a college prep school?
im currently attending the largest high school in michigan....and its very overcrowded...and big.... and the prep school is new and small....so please help me should i go to the public big school or the small new colege prep school?

A: Ignore the idiot who answered first, college prep schools offer great education. I have a few friends who left the high school I go to this year (due to overpopulation as well, being the biggest in the city) to go to a more college prep driven school (though most of the schools around here are vocational or CP). So it depends on what you want to do; if you're going into your junior or senior year especially I would recommend toughing it out for the last two years, your friends probably don't want to see you go if you're a senior and then you all don't get to experience all the fun stuff your school offers together. But it really depends on where you can get a better education and what's better for you, if you think you can get a better education at a smaller, less crowded school; then go for it. Good luck! (:
