The students taking classes at this new online school will never meet each other face-to-face . Do you think that 6th,7th,and 8th grade students should or shouldn't attend school online.

Q: What is the best online school to go to for medical transcription?
I would like to find a great online school for medical transcription. I would like to go straight from completing the course to working out of my home, so I can still be home with my 2 children. I was also wondering how difficult it is to get hired working from home if I've never had on the job training?

A: I took my course through Education Direct--I think they are called Penn Foster now--and I enjoyed every minute of it!! Going straight to completing the course into at-home work is very difficult, but it can be done. Once you are finished with your training there are a couple sites you can go to to look for work. http://mtstars.com and http://mtjobs.com and quite often they hire new people for at-home work. Hope this helps you.

Q: What is a good online school for writing?
I know Penn Foster College is a good school, but I want to know if there are others out there like this one. I do like correspondence schools more than just online schools.

A: I guess it all depends on what type if writing you want to pursue. But my only advice is to stick with real schools that have campuses that offer online courses for your writing major. Otherwise I would think online schools are frauds.

Q: How does one get a high school diploma when attending an online school like Jubilee Academy?
I am looking into them for my daughter who will be starting 8th grade in the fall. In order for her to go on to the college she wants she will need the diploma. Other online schools offer them, but they did not belong to the BBB and had quite a few complaints against them. Will she need to be tested in her senior year by the public school in town?? Any help is appreciated.

A: Okay, first off, I highly recommend you *not* go with Jubilee. You can search the archives here for some input. Also, search for the owner, Mimi Rothschild Mandel. She has been involved in a LOT of failed online schools, and even had legal issues in PA. That said, you can HS her using *any* curriculum or one you make yourself. She does *not* need a "certified, accredited, whatever you want to call it," diploma. The main way to get into college is via a portfolio, a transcript, and SAT or ACT testing. She can also take come community college classes as a high schooler and get some credits out of the way, and then transfer to college/university as a transfer student. No, she does not need to be tested in her senior year, other than the ACT & SAT. These are typically not given at the schools, but an offsite location such as a university. There are many reputable online schools. Some offer official diplomas and some do not. Personally, I will not use the diploma route for my son b/c I don't want him locked into the courses from one online program. I want to mix and match courses from all sources and make his transcript on my own. You should know that the diploma options usually cost more also. Here are some online high schools: =========== Apex: http://www.apexlearning.com/ K12 (uses some Apex courses and some of their own): http://www.k12.com/hsc/flash/ Florida Virtual School: http://www.flvs.net/ NorthStar Academy: http://www.northstar-academy.org/...... UNL Independent Study High School: http://nebraskahs.unl.edu/index.shtml...... Center for Distance and Independent Study: http://cdis.missouri.edu/ ============== Those will all be teacher led, if that's what you are looking for. You can also do parent-led programs and use whatever curriculum you want to, Abeka, BJU, Sonlight, etc. Also, check to see if your state has virtual school options (typically a K12 or Connections Academy). By using those, your daughter would be a public school student, so the whole diploma issue isn't one, as the academy will issue one just like any other public school. There is also the cost advantage - it will be "free" (minus normal PS fees). HTH!

Q: I need to get the best online school for a middle school child?
My daughter got kicked out of school for defending herself in a fight so they said either she gets home school or go to a G.I.V.E Center and i think if they send her their that she'll come out worst. So please help me to find a good online middle school. She is banned from gwinnett county schools for a year. I need a school that counts for her to get in 8th grade after her year suspension is over.

A: By "homeschool", I'm sure they meant "home bound" (called by different names in various states). That means a tutor would come to your house and give her the school work, pick it up, help her, etc. If your state has virtual charter public schools, you could go that route. Here are some online schools with middle school courses: Apex: http://www.apexlearning.com K12: http://www.k12.com FLVS: http://www.flvs.net/ UNL Independent Study High School: http://nebraskahs.unl.edu/index.shtml...... Center for Distance and Independent Study (U of MO): http://cdis.missouri.edu/

Q: What school is well respected and compatible with online campus?
Here's the thing. I'm young, 23; trying to get an education from an online school. However, as I do my research I find most the schools I was interested in, was consider: " A waste of Time" My current job requires me to travel 365 days year. But in fear of doing this the rest of my life, I want a degree. If anyone has any ideas or thoughts I'd welcome the advice.

A: Harvard is pretty well respected and teaches online - http://www.extension.harvard.edu/2007-08/DistanceEd/ They are also considerably cheaper than most people think. They're $300 per class cheaper than my local state U. UC- Berkeley is pretty well up there on the "well respected" list too. They teach online. http://www.unex.berkeley.edu/online/ UMass is generally well thought of and they offer degrees from associates to master's (and a doctorate or too as well) online. http://www.umassonline.net/Home.html fact is, most colleges in the US teach online these days - it's just "normal" in 2008. Petersons.com has a search engine for online programs. You might be truly surprised at what's out there for you these days. You can study with the finest professors in the world at the best colleges - from wherever you are. There are way more options than those "as seen on TV" schools. Thing is, if you're really that busy, do you have time for an online class? Online classes at a legit program don't require any less time, they just allow location and time flexibility. If you're spending lots of time in motel rooms while you travel, taking classes online would be ideal for you. If that's the case, why not take them from the best schools in the country?

Q: Is there an online school where I can teach a class for fun without a degree?
I love to teach so I'm lookin for an online school to teach at for fun. Any one know of any?

A: I taught at the International Institute in my town when I was just 21 and was studying to be a teacher. You can do afterschool programs or speciatly classes. You can also work with a literacy program or help tutor at the library. As for teaching on line; I am not aware of any programs where you can do this other than answering someone request here in answers.

Q: Should I stick with online school or try to go to a traditional campus?
I currently attend an online university. I am very thankful to be there and it is a good school. However, I do wish that I had actual books and a classroom to go to (sometimes). It is very likely that a community college that offers online courses (so I could do both if need be) will be less expensive, which means that my refund from my financial aid would be bigger. This is good because I have two toddlers-every little cent counts! :) Right now we only have one vehicle, that is why I originally signed up with an online school. When I have my own transportation should I go to a traditional campus? What would you do?

A: As someone who teaches both on-campus and online classes, I'll say this. You can get a quality education from both formats, but I personally prefer actual classroom training. Why? Because there's someone physically there to guide you along and to really see that you "know your stuff." Plus, employers tend to put more clout and weight upon classroom training vs online. Biggest issue is that with online learning, how does one really know that YOU did the work? How do I know that you didn't have somebody else type the answers, and you submitted it. With classroom learning, there's no doubt that YOU actually did the work because I can see it and hear how well you handle my questions. A much better judge of your abilities!

Q: What is the best and most affordable online school for graphic design?

A: unless you want to be a production artist or someone designing crappy web pages -- go to a real school that has a real program in graphic design. money shouldn't be an issue -- there are loans, grants and scholarships to look in to -- good luck

Q: Does anyone know of an online school that works with dial up?
I'm from Ohio, and two of my kids (ages 10 and 15) want to do virtual or internet school. However, we live in a rural area where broadband is not available. Does anyone know of an online school in which high speed internet is not a requirement?

A: You have OHVA available which uses the K12 curriculum. Our first year with K12 we only had dial-up and it was fine, just slow. The biggest issue was loading PDF's, but OHVA will supply you with the student pages and teacher's guides already printed from their system, so this isn't a big issue. The day DSL was available where we lived we signed up for it and we'll never go back.
