Q: Nursing schools?
Are there any colleges or Universities in Maryland that are good schools for nursing? It doesn't have to be a nursing school.

A: Towson University University of Maryland Johns Hopkins University Most community colleges.

Q: Should nursing schools lower their standards due to the shortage of nurses?
I've heard of the bill, Nurse Education Expansion, and Development Act (still underway) that allows "Public Health Service Act to authorize capitation grants to increase the number of nursing faculty and students, and for other purposes." Do you think this bill should be enforced? Should nursing schools lower their standards to beat the shortage of nurses we're experiencing? Or do you think there is an alternative, say, like increasing the salary of nursing professors so we won't be short of them? How do we defeat the nursing shortage?! You think the bill, if it becomes law, will do any good?

A: While I think there should be grants in place to hire more faculty and increase pay for instructors, there is absolutely no way nursing programs should lower their standards. People lives are depending on the critical thinking skills of a well educated nurse. Nursing school is designed to give you these skill while weeding out the incompetent. Nursing school is rigorous and intense and that should never change. Even if a person has the heart and the determination to do the job doesn't mean that they should.

Q: What are some good nursing schools in Illinois?
What are some good nursing schools in Illinois, specifically in or near Chicago? It be better if it is a college/university that offers a nursing program to become a registered nurse?

A: The University of Illinois at Chicago has a top ranked BSN program. Loyola & DePaul also have pretty good nursing schools that offer BSN degrees. Truman College, Kennedy King, and Malcom X are the city colleges that offer associate level RN programs.

Q: What are the best nursing schools in Canada?
I am looking for a nursing program that focus more on practical nursing as oppose to a more research oriented dynamic. Also, schools with January admission will too be helpful, but I am open to hear about any thing. Last but not least, does anyone know if there's a forum for nurses to discuss their concerns with their jobs/education/workplace etc? Thank you all in advance

A: There is the Assiniboine College in Brandon Manitoba that offers the LPN. The waiting list is about a year, but if you put in your application soon you may get in for July of 2008. The waiting lists in Manitoba for the RN program are at 2 year or three waiting list. I am also going into nursing and have an orientation for the LPN course at Assiniboine College for September 14th and I may get in for July 08. I have also started to look into the states for the RN program since I can get in for September 08. As for any other LPN courses I really don't know where they are offered. I have had a hard time finding any that have a sooner start date. Way too many waiting lists.

Q: How to get info about nursing schools?
I am planning on going to nursing school in Ohio.. does anybody know about any sites about nursing schools and the different types of things they offer, not just specific schools, just overall an informational site about nursing in general? Any help is appreciated. Thank You :-)

A: Check your local area first for vocational schools that offer LPN programs; also check with your local hospital; some hospitals will pay tuition for you to go to school especially if you are going to be an Rn. There are thousands of good nursing sites

Q: What are the best nursing schools in CA?
I am a senior this yr in H.S. and am interested in the nursing field and would like to know the basic steps that i need to take in order to b lead into the rite school. I would then like to know which are the top nursing schools. thanks for any help.

A: The best colleges in California that offer a BSN are UCLA, UC Irvine, San Diego State, SFSU, and SJSU. All of the state schools offer a BSN so you can look into any of them. University of Washington and Pennsylvania are said to have really good BSN programs as well... and UCSF is said to have the best masters program. My advice to you is once you hit college focus on your prereq. classes they are the most important... if you don't have at least a 3.5 in them you can kiss your chances of getting into a program good bye. All of the states schools get about 800 applicants a year and they only have about 60-120 spots to fill and I don't have to tell you how competitive UCLA is or the UC system. Good Luck

Q: Do nursing schools have to be licensed by the state?
If so, why are some nursing schools put on probation? How can they lose there accredidation and where can i find out if a certain nursing school is on probation? Thanks for any help.

A: Check with your state's department of education that oversees programs. Accreditation comes from independent sources.

Q: What are the Best Nursing Schools in Pennsylvania ?

A: Are you looking to attend classes in a traditional university class room setting? I know there are also some great schools that offer some of their courses online to help you with scheduling. The site below has some well written articles on health care and nursing degrees. Hope it helps.

Q: What are some of the best Nursing schools in California?
I live in the bay area and is currently in first year @ my community college. I'm positive about becoming a nurse and I'm trying to find the top schools with the best nursing programs. I know San Jose State University has a pretty prestigious Nursing program, but I need more to my list so I can start to choose! thanks and all your responses are appreciated.

A: The best way to find out info is to contact a student. You can find some contact information for California universities here. http://www.collegereviewed.com/California-Colleges-Universities.html The students always to know what's going on since they get to experience the classes and the lifestyle.

Q: What percentage usually of the current student population to nursing schools usually recruit each semester?
I was asking from a nursing school the number of total students in their nursing department out of the3500 students on their campus, and they only replied back that they accept 68 intakes twice per year for adult nursing and 26 intakes twice per year for mental health nursing. So , in your estimation, how many nursing students do you they have in total at this campus?? Thanks for your answers!

A: Impossible to tell. (The staff might be reluctant to give you a meaningful answer because they can't be sure whether you're a journalist researching some 'knocking' story. Numbers enrolled in different disciplines, numbers changing from one to the other, courses being 'telescoped' from two years into one, students 'externalised' for placements, and all sorts of other issues affecting the totals & averages, can have political implications. Alternatively, they may have assumed that you want to apply, and given you the information that allows you to statistically compare your chances of success there with your chances at other institutions.) Rather than asking the office, you can get a better idea of numbers by researching the institution. Find out how many graduated last year, the capacity of the school's buildings, the number, length and type of courses they provide, and other indicators, by obtaining prospectuses, planning applications, Annual Reports, and newspaper articles.

Q: Does anyone know of any Registered Nursing schools that pay full tuition?
Hi, I am considering becoming a registered nurse. I have heard some schools are in such need for male nurses that they will pay all tuition if the student agrees to work there a few years after passing the exams. Does anyone know of any schools in the US in any state that offer this kind of opportunity? Thank you.

A: I don't know of any schools that offer to pay full tuition for RN programs, but there are numerous hospitals throughout the country that offer "Earn as You Learn" programs to become an LPN or RN. The hospitals have partnerships with the local colleges to enroll a limited amount of students into the college's nursing program. From what I have seen here (Florida) most hospitals require you to have your prerequisite general education requirements completed and usually require you to be an employee of the hospital. They have you sign a contract, stating you will maintain a certain GPA level, work a minimum set of hours in the hospital per pay period (usually as a CNA), and they pay you a set wage for your work hours and your actual classroom hours. Most of them also have a post-graduation requirement of a 2 year work commitment in that hospital's area of need. All this is in exchange for them paying your tuition, books, lab fees, and all other required fees related to your "nursing" level classes.

Q: What are the names of nursing schools that are $9000 per academic year or less?
I am trying to enroll in the Army's AECP nursing program but I need to find a certified nursing school that cost $9000 per academic year or less.

A: I don't know how it works with the Army program. If you check out local hospitals many of them have a scholarship program that allows you to go to the RN program of your choice for FREE if you sign a paper saying you will work there (at the hospital) for a year. Because you are willing to work there for a year (some places two years) they pay for it

A: I don't know where you live, but Ohio University has an amazing nursing program and it's affordable. The work is going to be hard though, lots of chemistry, biology, anatomy, etc... Good luck!
