Q: New School?
This is my second day in a new middle school 8th grade. I already made some friends but they say for me to be in there group - I must prove to them I am not afraid to get a detention. Should I do it? I received detentions in my old school - but they want me to prove to them I do get detentions.

A: Friends do not want to see you get into trouble./ Find different friends,.You are in the wrong group.

Q: When does elementary school holiday/break start in 2008 after the new school year?
I heard the school year starts in August or early September. In Australia we have four terms a year with 2 week holidays for the kids in between each term. When is the next short school break or holiday for schools in America? Not the new start of the new school year huge break before August in 2009. Im looking for the date when kids might have 1-3/4 weeks of school after starting the new school year.

Q: How much is a reasonable amount to spend on new school clothes for a teenage girl each year?
My niece's school got out in March and starts in July 15 because it is a private boarding school. Her birthday is on June 10, but because of where she lives the mail takes baout three weeks to a month to arrive. I want to send her enough money to buy new school clothes, how much should I send? not july 15 but around that time Well her parents have money obviously, but I don't think any less than $200 would do. She has never asked me for any kind of gift or money, she has straight A's, she's 16 and bought her self a car with money she saved, she is taking part time college classes at night online, and also volunteers 10 hours a week at her boarding schools activity center

A: as a teenager, i would probably say like $300. clothes these days are pretty expensive. its really nice to have the extra money and not trying to cram all the stuff in under $100. but you can't always get what you want :P

Q: My daughter is starting a brand new school and my mom insists on taking her on vacation?
So, my daughter is starting pre-k in september in a brand new (semi expensive) catholic private school. I know it is going to be a huge adjustment for her going from a very disorganized, small day care center to a "big girl school" with an actual curriculum, new friends, new teacher and new environment. But I have a small problem: My mother (her grandmother) wants to take her on vacation to the shore only two days after she starts her new school. She would only be missing a week but she would be missing the introductions, back to school night, etc. I dont want to make this transition more stressful than it already will be for her. And I dont know if a vacation with her grandmother is appropriate two days after school starts. I dont get along with my mom at all and she insists that I am being selfish and school is not that important. What should I do?

A: tell your mom to shove it. if you dont want your daughter to miss a week of school, dont let her

Q: Is it a good idea to have my eldest son start a new school in the fall or keep him in the same one?
We need to move because we are currently not in his district anymore for his school. But the housing alot more expensive to move closer. Or are other option is to transfer him to a brand new school. A benefit to that is we will have a bigger place and pay less for rent. But I am worried taking him out of his school with his friends might not go well. He is going into thrid grade. Thanks for the insight gryl6 .. =) Well we plan on staying in the area for a while... We like the community well city we live in..

A: I don't think third grade will be a problem with starting a new school. Kids that young don't have too much of a problem making friends. It's 6th and 7th grade where they get problems being the new kid. This is also from my own personal experience starting a new school in the third grade.

Q: How do I go about planning a new school year as an 8th grade Social Studies teacher?
I just finished my student-teaching this past spring and will be starting in August at my first teaching job teaching 8th grade US History. I'm not really sure where to start in planning my class and lessons and assessments. Are there any experienced middle school teachers that can help a new teacher starting out? I'm am in the state of Kentucky. Meant, I am in the state of Kentucky.

A: Master of Truth seems to be just that. I agree. I am sure your college prepared you and you have the knowledge. I remember getting ready for my first year. I thought I could change the world (how's that for high expectations!) But, nervously I asked my professor what is the first thing I do on the job. She thought a minute and said the first thing she usually did was open the mail from the summer. Ha. That seemed to put me back into reality and I knew I could open mail too. This is not to understate the importance of your question, just to take the edge off . Take the Core Content, plug it into your school calandar and begin lesson ideas. You are wise to consider assessment at this point. You have time to gather materials as you go. Be prepared and stay organized. By the concern you show, I know you will be fine.

Q: How do you adjust quickly to a new school with new people and a campus?
I just started 9th grade and only one guy from my middle school is here. So many new people, new campus, new classes, so how do I adjust to all this quickly?

A: well you could try joining in you can join some teams get to know people better

Q: What are some good online websites to buy cheap new or used textbooks for school?
Since school is starting up, buying textbooks at school can be costly. I've searched sites like Amazon for cheap new or used textbooks but they are only a few cents cheaper than at school. Any other good websites to look at when buying online textbooks?

A: I don't know, I like Amazon.com, but that's just me. Check out www.half.com (ebay for textbooks) and www.cheaptextbooks.com . You may get lucky and find some good deals. Your best bet to find cheap textbooks is at your school. If your school has an online message board type thing for students, see if anyone is selling textbooks that you need or post a question asking for the books you need. Usually in cafeterias or student lounge or those types of areas there are bulletin boards for announcements for students. Check to see if anyone has posted a bulletin selling books or you could post your own asking for the books you need. You are so much more likely to get a good cheap deal this way. Often the online sites will get you good deals, but you end up making up for the difference in shipping charges.

Q: What are the best school districts in southern new hampshire?
i am thinking about moving out of massachusetts into southern new hampshire, but i will be leaving a really great school district. are there any great school districts near the border in new hampshire that you would recommend?

A: Well, I can't reccommend one for you, but can tell you where not to go. Nashua, NH. I went through 12 years in the Nashua school district, and went to school through unresolved teacher contract issues. The city did/does not have enough to pay the teachers, and even fired 29 teachers in one high school, making the class sizes bigger. Our previous superintendant, Julia Earl, took "business" trips to Texas(where her family lives) on the city's dime. Then cost the city over $100,000 in a lawsuit before she left. The new superintendant cares too much what the school board and the board of alderman think of him to make choices that will benefit the school. DO NOT choose Nashua.

Q: When do stores start bringing the new back to school clothes?
Like American Eagle and places like that. I was planning on going clothes shopping about August 3rd..close enough to school..but far away enough to beat the rush. Do you think most stores will have the new clothes by then? Thanks.

Q: What is the easiest way to make friends at a new school?
My daughter is going to a new middle school and she wants to know how to make new friends.

A: i went to 5 different schools, and i learned that its hard for a new students to make friends, and that good friends usually come help the new guy. All my best friends helped me on my first day, and since they did i knew they were REAL friends, friends that will help you no matter what, friends that will always be with you when you most need them, so tell your daughter, the easiest way to make friends at a new school is to wait and let them find YOU instead ph.adrian

Q: What kind of taxes are used to construct a new school?
If a new elementary, junior high or high school needs to be built where would the taxes come from? Local bonds or levies, the county, the state or from the federal level?

A: state funding is supplemented by local bonds. the amount available to any school district is determined by the number of kids in that district. if the headcount is growing, there's a need for more classrooms, a situation districts love because they can get more funding, hire more teachers, take more property by eminent domain, etc.

Q: What is a good personalized gift for a new elementary school teacher?
My mother -in-law is just graduated with a degree in Special Education, and is preparing for a new job at a local elementary school. Is there something we (my husband, myself and our 2 yr old son) could get personailized for her that would also be helpful in the classroom? (examples: Stationary that says from the desk of Theresa, a custom rubber stamp, etc) Thanks in advance!

A: A leather cover for her lesson plan book. And tell her "congratulations!!"" Quite an acheivement!

Q: What is a useful personalized gift for a new elementary school teacher?
My mother -in-law is just graduated with a degree in Special Education, and is preparing for a new job at a local elementary school. Is there something we (my husband, myself and our 2 yr old son) could get personailized for her that would also be helpful in the classroom? (examples: Stationary that says from the desk of Theresa, a custom rubber stamp, etc) Thanks in advance!

A: I would suggest a subscription to one of the many website out there that can provide reproducable worksheets or pictures/symbols/images used for picture schedules and communication boards (something that is used in a lot of special education classrooms!), There are also sites that allow teachers to download, personalize and print out social stories (short stories that talk about specific social circumstances, feelings, etc)...another useful item when working with special ed. Depending on the grade level, subscriptions to magazines such as Family Fun (great for craft and cooking ideas), World (National Geographic for Kids) or even Sesame Street (for very young kids) would be great. Since most teachers tend to build up personal libraries of kids books, curriculum sources books and such, you could order a set of personalized book plates to put inside them so everyone knows who the book belongs to. You could order a stamp for the same thing. Pencils seem to vanish on a daily basis. You could order a gross of customized pencils (Ms. Theresa's Class or something similar) as a great way to start the year! Finally, for something truely personel, I have come across journals specifically for a teacher to record memories, ideas, suggestions and special moments from her day at work. These make wonderful gifts for new teachers as it gives them a place to jot down all the ideas they have while giving them a place to go back to year's later.
