Q: middle school?
I have to choose between two schools for middle school because I am zoned for a really bad school right now. School A has uniforms, and almost all of my friends go there. School B is by the beach, starbucks, the library and doesn't have uniforms. If i go to School B, I will have to leave the new friends i make because everyone at School B goes to a different high school. School A's kids go to the high school that I am supposed to go to. Which school should I go to?? both schools are A schools and I will get a great education at both schools!!!

A: School hours do not change based on region in Japan. Japan has unified education in the entire nation. Usually schools start around 8am and kids leave around 2pm. So they stay at school about 6 hours.

A: For the people who did well and worked hard in middle school, there is benefit. You have learned how to study and succeed in taking tests or writing papers. If you have done well in middle school, you can do well in high school, get a scholarship, and do well in college. Both of my kids said they would start to work harder when it counted in high school. Then they said they would start to work harder when they were in college. Both were intelligent but did not have good work habits. I teach college now and find that many of my students do not have the dedication to put in the work for good grades. A person of average intelligence with good work habits can get better grades than smarter people who never learn to put any effort into school work. School is work, and it does affect your future. Good grades can open up doors for you. Your effort in middle school is not wasted. I teach world civ./history in college. This is also taught in most middle schools. Many students learn very little of this in middle school when they have a whole year - 180 hours - of world history classes. When I try to teach it in the 32 hours that I have for each semester, I find I have to start from scratch - EXCEPT - for the people who did the work in middle school and are way ahead of the others. I've decided to assume they know basic world history and teach as though they recall middle school. The ones who did not work and learn earlier have to catch up or be left behind.

A: To the first comment: no football/soccer game lasts "a few hours", that's ridiculous. And not even the pros train for 6 hours a day. I live in europe so I would have to guess that "middle school" would be fractionally less than High school maybe 35 mins a half.

A: If you are using this expression to modify a noun, I'd hyphenate the whole thing: My niece is a middle-school-aged girl. However, since hyphens are falling out of use, you can get away with not using them at all, especially with common expressions like this one: My niece is a middle school aged girl. I like theProfessor's reasoning for using hyphens, but I disagree that school-aged goes together. I think that middle-school goes together better than school and aged. I think this is exactly why hyphens are falling into disuse; not even educated types can get them right. A book that I think has a pretty complete discussion on hyphens is "Woe is I" by O'Connor (I might have gotten the name wrong, but the title is write, and the name is close). Happy punctuating!

School officials stated that the reason they're planning to do this is because parents should not ignore the fact children in this age bracket are having sex. He also stated that he thinks it is ok to pass out birthcontrol pills to high school students. What do you think?

A: The girls would be checked by a doctor before being given the birth control. And they would check up on her every few months to make sure everything is okay. I think its a great idea, along with sex education and contraceptives being provided, this will hopefully lower the teen pregancy rate in this country. Take for example The Netherlands, they give out birth control and condoms and have the LOWEST teen pregancy rate and LOWEST abortion rate in the world.

A: Being a nerd gets cool in high school, you meet more people like you with the same interests, and then you start to realise how genuinely stupid the people calling you names are. Don't worry things will get better!

A: Well, you definitely have a lot to look forward too! There are some differences, but not many. Mainly, teachers will expect you to take responsibility for your actions. If you are late on homework, expect a lower grade. Now this doesn't mean you should not talk to your teacher if there is a reasonable excuse for why you were late or did not turn in an assignment. Just make sure that you are upfront and honest as soon as possible, otherwise they will feel you are just making excuses. In high school, you want your teacher to know you. Once you apply for college you will need teacher recommendations. Don't "suck up" to a teacher, but let them know you. Ask questions, go in for help, participate in class. If they do not see you doing these things, it will be hard for them to give a true view of who you are to colleges (they may even decide not to write a recommendation if they feel they do not know you enough). I do not know what type of middle school you went to or how difficult it was. Those were my two main changes though. In middle school I didn't really try to let my teachers know me, but in high school its important. Also being held responsible for your actions and school work was a huge change. In middle school, teachers tend to "baby" students a bit. My high school had a zero tolerance for late work... which meant, if you didn't turn it in when it was due, you just got a zero. Also projects were expected to be turned it even if you were at home sick (the school expected me to find someone to turn it in for me like a friend or parent). Now, there are circumstances that teachers will understand if these things happen, but you need to make sure to talk to them. Friends - well lets just say you get to meet a lot of new people. My school had 2500 kids and I didn't know everyone there. I just met a lot of new people though and whoever I got along with a hung out with. My school did have groups, but groups are not necessarily a bad thing. You just have to be confident in who you are. Hang out with who you like... don't try to be cool. Trying to be cool will generally just make you not cool. Hope this helps...
