Q: Florida Schools?
i'm Moving to Miami. I'm in Grade 12 in Canada. I would like to know what time each period starts in schools, and what month school starts?

A: My friend is a teacher in Florida. His school day starts at 7:30 and classes at his school start at 8:00. He usually starts back to school in August. As the previous poster indicated, schools set their own internal schedules.

Q: Has anyone experienced discrimination based on age, sex, and race in Florida schools?
I have experienced discrimination based on age in hiring practices in some school districts in Florida. If you had similar experience (any form of discrimination), please let me know what kind and where. I am about ready to go public.

A: I can only comment on the Okaloosa County Schools and from my perspective, I haven't blatantly seen any violations of discrimination, but that doesn't mean it doesn't exist. The schools here must be somewhat careful as there are major military bases with a huge population of school age students and the military parents lobby pretty heavily. No issues here, happy to say.

Q: Where are the best high schools in Florida?
We are moving to the southeast part of Florida from NY with our 16 year old daughter. Even though she will be a senior, she is looking forward to the change. Where are the best high schools? I haven't a lot of positives with Florida public schools. Can you help?

A: Florida schools are divided among county districts. You would need to first find the correct county school district, and then compare high schools within the county. One good thing about high school choices in Florida is that we have our newly implemented school choice plan. What that means is that your daughter is free to select a high school from the entire county, not in just a particular zone. Of course there's always the possibility that the school you choose will be full, making her second choice apply. My advice, research now, but the day that you arrive in Florida, go to the court house and register your domicile...and then head down to the nearest school choice office. Enroll her as a student in that county, even though school hasn't started, and have her make her school choice selection immediately. The sooner the better. She'll have more of a chance at getting in the school she wants if you don't wait until the last minute. Another thing to consider is the credits and how they will transfer when moving. For example, we lived in Indiana when my girls started high school. They needed 40 credits in Indiana to graduate. When we moved to Florida, they needed 28. The catch is that in Indiana, each class received a full credit. English One, Semester One was one credit...whereas in Florida, English One, semester one was just 1/2 credit. So in other words, my girls were behind in credits at the end of their first year simply because an equal comparison of credits needed based on Indiana's system would mean they needed 56 credits in Florida. If this is going to be an issue with your daughter, I'd inquire about whether or not any high schools in the county you're moving to has 4x4 schools....meaning they take four classes a day, each class being about 1 hr and 50 minutes long. This allows a student to receive one complete year of English in just one semester (or term is called here). The benefit of this is that she may be able to make up a credit or two because she'd actually get 8 full credits down here during her senior year, where for example in Indiana, on a 6 class per day schedule, at the end of the year, 12 credits would be issued (but equal to 6 in Florida). On a final note, she will be required to take and pass the FCAT test before she's allowed to graduate. If you will be arriving in Florida soon, I'd make sure she sat for the testing over the summer, just incase there's a chance that she will not pass it. She will be able to take it twice during her senior year too, but it's better to be safe than sorry.

Q: Where is one of the best fashion schools in Florida?
I'm trying to go to fashion school. I live in Miami and I know that if I go out-of-state to go to school is going to be more expensive so what are some great schools here in Florida? I want to relocate.

A: Here's a list of fashion programs in Florida: http://www.fashionschools.com/?WT.srch=1&WT.mc_n=edu_google_fash_gsfashdr_flfasschs_200609&s_kwcid=florida%20fashion%20schools|1144735803#FL But, please, do your homework, with respect to accreditation and curriculum. Some institutions in that list are clearly genuine academic institutions, with good accreditation, and others are, shall we say, less likely to offer rewarding educational opportunities.

Q: why do you think the florida schools had the rule about restricting "handicapped" students to play sports?
why do you think the florida schools had the rule about restricting "handicapped" students to play sports

A: i don't know about it-but it sounds illegal- students with disabilities must be accommodated (reasonably) in extra curricular activities.. they can only be excluded on an individual basis--such as a person in a wheelchair can't be reasonably accommodated to play football, but a person using a racing chair was accommodated to be on the track team....

Q: Which Florida Schools is considered the best in Law?
I want to become a lawyer, and I want to know where I should transfer after my AA.

A: You only have an AA? Then it doesn't really matter. You still need to get your bachelors before going on to law school. Pick a school you like. Miami, Florida, and Florida State are the most popular. They're as good as any. U of Florida has the best law school in the state of Florida.

Q: Which are the best beauty schools in Florida?
I want to go to a beauty school and i live in florida, can anyone give me any opinons?

A: If you're really good, the school won't matter. You will be required to learn certain things to pass the State Board exam. A Vocational Technical School will teach those things, for a lot less $$, than a private school will charge you. They will also help you apply for financial aide, if you need it. If you have the big bucks, a Redken Academy, will teach you how to pass State Board and how to be a Redken Colorist. There are other private schools, throughout the State, which cost more than a Vo-Tech, but are less than Redken. My advice to you is: Visit several schools, talk to the instructors and the students. Ask your hairdresser, if she attended a local school and how she liked it. Perhaps, you could find a job as a shampoo assistant, so you could see how things work in a real salon setting, before making a final decision. Your final phase of training will begin in the salon and will continue until you no longer love being a hairdresser. Every salon operates differently, so you have to be flexible enough to learn a new set-up. You will learn something from every hairdresser you work with; some good, some not so good. And my final piece of advice, if you decide to become a hairdresser is how to properly clean color bottles: Put about 1/4 (one quarter) teaspoon of regular table salt in your color bottle(s), filll the bottle half way with warm water, replace the cap, cover the spout with your finger, shake vigorously, rinse with warm water and replace the cap, so that you don't loose it. The salt will make the color release from the sides of the bottle. Best of luck!

Q: What are the best architecture schools Florida?
I am looking forward for schools to get my B.S. and need to make up my mind, can not afford a private university so keep it at the state level.

A: UF has a good architecture program. I know we (FAU) have one but I'm not sure how good it is. I've heard that it's pretty competitive to get into.

Q: Does anybody know any good break dancing schools in Florida?
I live in lakeland Florida which is between tampa and orlando and I was wondering if anyboy knew where some good break dancing schools are in or between those two citys.

A: hey, try looking at hiphop schools in the phone book if u really wanna go to classes *they might teach breakdancing*, but i think thats a waste of money. u can learn by urself at home. go to BBoy.org, or other bboy sites and they have moves you can learn with instructions and videos. they also advertise a dvd called StepbyStep on BBoy.org.... i got it for 20 bucks and its very good. those show the basics and bboys branch off from the basics by creating their own moves. theres forums there on bboy.org that help u hook up with neighboring bboys and bgirls. every bboy/girl i know didnt learn from classes.

Q: i need to compare city schools in rochester ny to schools in florida?
i need to compare city in rochester new york to city schools in jacksonville florida. how would i go about doing that. also how would i compare neighborhoods and crime rates

A: I live in jacksonville. Let me just give you a heads-up. Murder and crime are rampant in the city. this is our local news. So crime is high because there aren't enough cops. www.firstcoastnews.com you can check the daily happenings here. As far as neighborhoods, stay away from the westside, northside, downtown, and orange park away. There is actually a very small area that is acceptable, and that is the beaches area. There are some neighborhoods off of a road called Hodges. there is an excellent school there called Chets Creek. This would be your best bet. Another good school is Abess Park. Another one would be Twin Lakes Academy. Sabal Palm, Neptune Beach, and Jacksonville Beach are also good. This is the school board website. http://www.dreamsbeginhere.org/ You can see the school grades and mixture of students there. Here's another school website: http://www.greatschools.net/ you can compare schools here. If you want more info you can email me.

A: 4, that is alot, must be because of all those Quebecer babyboomers.

Q: What are the best accounting schools in Florida?
I'm planning on majoring in Accounting- I'm almost done in a two-year institution and i'm doing a little research to have a list of different choices to be able to make the best one. I can't seem to find what Universities are the best in Florida. Any help would be appreciated.... Thanks in advance

A: The best way to find the best schools for accounting majors is to look at their business school, which accounting is part of. Thus here are some ratings: (Public = *) In Business Weeks Ratings: (in the nation) - University of Florida* #43 - University of Miami #47 - Florida State* #77 - Florida Int'l University* #80 - University of Central Florida* #90 - University of South Florida* #93 You can go to this website and look at UF's rating and some comments about the school. http://bwnt.businessweek.com/bschools/un... So basically, in the most general sense the best public school in Florida for business and especially accounting is the University of Florida. After UF, FSU and FIU are also very good schools for accounting. Personally, I believe that behind UF, FIU is the best school for your major, because you will have many more opportunities for internships and employment in Miami than you will in Tallahassee. They are also highly regarded for their business and accounting majors. With that said, it really doesn't matter which school you go to. As long as you apply yourself and do well (about 3.7 GPA and above), you will not have a problem. In addition accountants in Florida are in high demand so you will be in good shape when you graduate, regardless of where you go. Good Luck!
