Q: Why would Barack Obama say that he would require "schools of education" to be accredited?
when they are in fact already required to be accredited before teacher certification can be granted? Why is he once again stating he will do something that is already being done? Please do not answer "some schools are not accredited" this is strictly regarding teacher certification: http://www.barackobama.com/issues/education/ Prepare Teachers: Obama will require all schools of education to be accredited.

A: All schools have to be accredited to receive federal money. The accreditation is controlled by the states. What double speak is he using when he talks about "schools of education"? I might be missing something but isn't School supposed to mean Education?

Q: How do you feel about the state of mathematical education in public schools in the US?
We have all heard of the dwindling of high-school graduates seeking higher education in the fields of math and science, why do you think this is? ******************************************** Because of the nature of this question, I feel it would be inappropriate for me to choose the best answer. Therefor I will put the question up to vote after I feel people have had enough time to make their responses.

A: One of Newton's laws is that for every action there is an equal opposite reaction. The consequence of having every child pass without making sure that the capable students are challenged is the sorry state math education is in now.

Q: When is the Chicago Public Schools Drivers Education sign up for teens that don't attend a public school?
My son wants to take drivers ed during the summer because his high school doesnt offer it during the summer. When is the sign up for the summer drivers education in the summer and do you have any advice as to what time we should be there by because I hear that the lines fill up quickly. Thank You!!

A: I think you should call the Registration office of that school. I was in Maine East High School in Dist. 207. In fact, I took it in Summer School but the Registration was going on during our regular school period. I assume you still have chance to go apply for it. Hasn't your son already been asked by his Homeroom teacher? In my case my first class teacher had all the form. Whoever wanted to go drive in summer school filled those out. If he is not given those forms yet then registration is not going on just yet. I would recommend you still call the school and ask them for the Reg. date of Driver Ed. Hint for you son- When he is driving do NOT look at the lane lines, just look in the middle of the road. NOT all driver. ED Instructor are kind. Some are rude because they want to teach your Driving fast. Mine was horribly rude guy. Ask him to just take everything EASY and take time to learn. If he gets A or B he gets the License from the school but if not then he has to go to DMV and give the practical test there. Goody Luck to him!

Q: Any ideas for my project/dissertation on children/schools and education in general?
Bascially Im starting my research project next year but we have to decide by May 1st this year what we want to do it on. Im having huge difficulty trying to think of something. I much prefer being given a title. Areas I am interested in are differences between a school in a socially deprived area and a school in a better off area. Assessment and its impact on childrens learning Does anybody have any other ideas on interesting education research areas or any advice? Thanks :-)

A: This sort of combines the two areas you said you were interested in... How about... Factors contributing to differences in standardized assessment scores in socially deprived areas versus "better off" areas. Or... The differential effects of feedback from assessments on students in socially deprived areas and "better off" areas. If you need me to clarify what I mean by either of these suggested topics, email me at ptdrummajor@yahoo.com Best of luck to you!

Q: Schools paying for education if you work there for certain amount of time?
Hello, I've heard that if you go to school to get a degree in education, that (depending on the school you work for after graduating) they will pay off your student loan if you agree to be an employee there for a predetermined amount of time. So if you'd quit your job as a teacher before the end of your 'tenure' you need to pay off your own student loan, rather than your employer paying it off. Is there such a thing? Thanks so much!

A: Yes, there are programs out there both at the government and private orgaization levels. The programs primarily exist in low income schools or certain teaching professions. It can range from two to five years of service in duration to get it cancelled. I have included some links which should help in learning more about the teacher student loan forgiveness program.

Q: Why are some schools better at providing education and extra curricular activities than others?
I'm sad to see schools not providing as good an education as other schools, Cutting back on funds for music and sports. I'm going to sound old,but when I was young, starting at 4th grade, my public schools that I had attended provided me with music classes and an instrument to play.Myelementary schools had schedules so tht my school could compete with other schools in soccer, softball, and volleyball. There were programs for public schools so tht children from different schools can come together and play music and perform. I don't see this in the schools where my children attend and I'm dissappointed. Why has this happened and how can we get it back?

A: Where I live, this isn't really a problem but I suppose some schools don't have the resources they need for extra-curricular activities. I think it has to do with the government adn how much they are willing to spend on public school each year and how the public school choose to spend that money. For example, computers would be considered to be a higher importance then a volley ball court etc. It really does depend on which school you go to as to how many extra-curricular activites that you can be involved in.

Q: Do schools that offer secondary education cover all subjects or just the subject you want to teach?
I am trying to find a college in Texas that offers English Teacher Education but I don't know if that means elmentary english teacher or just in general. And I also can't figure out if schools that offer secondary education teach you about all the subjects or just one.

A: Colleges offer both Elementary and Secondary Education. For Elem. Ed., you will have courses in all subjects. In Sec.Ed, you will have courses in how to teach plus specialized courses in your Major (Math, Science, Language, etc.)

Q: children education-do infant schools good enough in United kingdom?
do infant schools good enough in United kingdom for aged 4 to 10 kids? are the facilities enough for child education? education resources enough for children in the United kingdom? are breakfast clubs and after school clubs enough for kids? (b) is there enough care for older children?

A: They vary considerably, some are fantastic and others quite poor. The state education system is very over stretched. Often there are far too many kids in the class and no assistants for the teacher. Where children come to the school unprepared ie; they are not able to dress themselves for PE, sit quietly for a few minutes or do as they are told then the whole class suffers. Relative to other european countries our education system is very poor indeed. However teachers here do the best they can with very limited resources, and a wide range of children to educate. My kids have never had a bad teacher, but have been in some very bad classes, where learning has been very difficult!

Q: TEENAGERS and PARENTS an TEACHERS can i have your opinion about the sex education taught in schools?
i just recently heard that SCHOOLS do not teach anything but abstinence sex education. i heard the government will not fund any sex education for schools that isn't all abstinence. from what i heard they don't teach about birth control or condoms or safe sex or what to do it you do get pregnant. all they teach is don't do it. i don't know what it is that makes people think that teaching kids about sex is going to go out there and have sex. NOT teaching them is only going to make it so they are not prepared and don't know how to protect themselves against pregnancy and STD's. people say that the teen pregnancy rate and teen STD rates are going up because kids are irresponsible little horn dogs who aren't thinking to protect themselves and it never occurs to anyone that if they were taught about safe sex and given condoms they would be prepared. so my question is do you think that it is better to have kids properly taught the consequesces of sex or continue the ignorance? okay maybe not all schools teach abstinence only BUT THE GOVERNMENT WILL NOT FUND ANY OTHER PROGRAMS besides absintence only. and i agree taht abstinince is the only 100% way to avoid std or pregnancy my point is that it is COMPLETELY UNREALISTIC to think that teenagers are NOT going to have sex therefore it only makes sense to teach them what they need to know to PROTECT THEMSELVES!

A: I 100% agree with your post. My high school did mostly touch on std's and "peer pressure" of it. Whether it be from your boyfriend/gf or classmates of popularity etc. I mostly learn what I know from self education. I would read up on it of the human body, relationship issue's, sexual organs etc. My mom also enlighten me as I brung it up/asked questions. It is sad that our government, mostly President Bush thinks it can be ignored if taught only abstains. Never the less, we are sexual human beings and it won't be ignored. It will only get worse. It isn't just up to the school system either. It is up to your own self. If you don't educate your own self, then obviously not mature yet to have sex. So, it takes more than just school as well.

Q: What kinds of arguments do you believe music education in all levels of schools would have?
In other words, how is music education in all levels of schools important/unimportant?? Need some serious answers please!

A: Music gives people a way to express themselves or to feel talented. It's a great accomplishment after you learn a song or whatever. Also, it's perceived that music students usually get higher grades than non-music students because of their ability to multi-task.

Q: To what extent do our schools serve the goals of a true education?
What is true education? What are the goals of a true education? How close are our schools to reaching these goals?

A: I'm not entirely sure what you mean by "true education". Do you mean an education that prepares us for the real world? Some people would say our kids need to be reading more classics. I think we're doing better as a country at the basics, like math and reading. It seems to fall apart as subjects become more advanced, though. We're doing terrible in exposing our kids to the arts, and their critical thinking skills are terrible.

Q: During the time of MLK and segregation, black and white students went different schools was the education same?
i know black and white students attended different schools but was the education the same? did they learn the same material?

A: ' ' By declaring that the discriminatory nature of racial segregation ... "violates the 14th amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which guarantees all citizens equal protection of the laws," Brown v. Board of Education laid the foundation for shaping future national and international policies regarding human rights. The Case The Supreme Court combined five cases under the heading of Brown v. Board of Education, because each sought the same legal remedy. The combined cases emanated from Delaware, Kansas, South Carolina, Virginia and Washington, DC. South Carolina - Briggs v. Elliot In Claredon County, the State NAACP first attempted, unsuccessfully and with a single plaintiff, to take legal action in 1947 against the INFERIOR conditions African American students experienced under South Carolina’s racially segregated school system. By 1951, community activist Rev. J.A. DeLaine, convinced African American parents to join the NAACP efforts to file a class action suit in U.S. District Court. The Court found that the schools designated for African Americans were GROSSLY INADEQUATE in terms of buildings, transportation and teacher’s salaries when compared to the schools provided for whites. An order to EQUALIZE the facilities was virtually IGNORED by school officials and the schools were NEVER MADE EQUAL. This class action case was named for Harry Briggs, Sr. ' ' (emphasis added) http://brownvboard.org/summary/

Q: what could be done to make american schools and education be better?
im doing research on Brown vs board of education. this case led to major improvements american schools and society. and then there's a hard question: what could be done to make it even better? sine i've been only a few months in America, i don't really know much about their problems concerning education. i'd really appreciate any ideas or suggestions. thank u!

A: As a Middle School Counselor, I can tell you what I think and what I see from 30 years of experience. First of all, teachers are expected to do FAR more than just teach their subject areas nowdays! They are expected to do everything from crossing guard and building janitorial duties to building a child's character (traditionally thought to be a parental job, but since most do not fullfill this obligation, it now falls on the teacher to provide this guidance). Top that off with students being forced to take far too many mandated tests and meet far higher standards. High standards are wonderful to set as expectations, but that trickles down to the elementary ages.....when our children should be able to play more and be children. I realize some people will comment that today's children must be prepared to meet the competition they will come up against in the world so that's why the level of standards must be higher. I don't mean to let them play all day. I just mean when we put our three year olds in classrooms and expect them to perform at certain standard levels, it is not always going to be what is best for the child. They are only a mere three years out of the womb for heaven's sake! I think schools should always have a fine arts and physical education program second to none for all children to participate in. There will always be math and science that keep up, but our children need to be more than wizards. PE will keep them physically fit and mentally alert. Music, Drama, and Art will keep them emotionally well rounded and in touch with their souls. Many students would not even stay in school were it not for belonging to their sports, band, choir, drama, or art department! As a wonderful PR for towns, our school boards should recognize and support these organizations as some of their very highest valued subjects instead of cutting them first thing when money gets a little tight! Veteran teachers should be paid well for their value to our children's education! Teachers are no where near paid what they deserve which is sad when we require all teachers to have a college education! Many end up having to spend 5 years in college to acquire enough hours to complete the degree required of them. They have loans to pay back. I think it would be a great thing to pay back at least a portion of their loans for each year they spend in teaching our children...especially those who teach children in diverse or low income school systems. I know there are many other things that will be good answers to your question, but these are the top few in my opinion! Thanks for asking!

Q: What do you think of the standard of education in schools today, can children spell?
I am from Australia, if you are responding from other countries could you identify your country so I can compare responses, thankyou.

A: I am in the US, I feel that most adults can't even spell, but children nowadays, know the songs on the radio quicker than they know how to read or write and it's sad. These teachers, have to deal with disrespectful children, all the while trying to teach something, the parents take no responsibility for their children's education and its sad. My dad, used to read and spell with me and buy me educational games, instead of movies and video games.

Q: What percentages of schools teach marriage in secondary education?
How many schools in the united states teach marriage in secondary education?

A: I think it's 50%. May be more than that, thanks
