Q: Is Charter school a better choice then LAUSD district schools?
Do most charter schools close down in the california region? How about if the school is 2 years old for instance and is a charter school better then public LAUSD district ones?

A: I would guess you're referring to the financial difficulties of LEAP and their unexpected closure earlier this summer. Any school with a semi-independent funding stream is vulnerable, especially if parents don't ask questions and perform strict audits to know how much is coming in and how much the school spends. Are charters better than public schools? Not necessarily. There are great charters and great public schools. You really need to do your homework (try a site like GreatSchools "Research and Compare" feature) and physically go visit. There are charters with awful scores and there are public schools with great numbers. The key at any successful school is that parents have to be active (if just for the enrollment process), and active parents usually translates to parents that care that kids do homework, that kids go to school, and that kids succeed.

Q: do elementary schools in your district have to accept your child?
My 9 year old son is a special needs child and his district school wont allow him to attend. Is that legal?

A: Generally speaking under IDEA, Your local educational agency (LEA) must provide an education in the "Least Restrictive Environment" (LRE) unless there have been expulsion proceedings. The LRE is the environment where the child will the most challenged. However, it does not have to be at the local neighborhood school. They do need to provide the Least Restrictive Environment - but that is often up for debate. If they have an alternative school, they may choose to meet your child's needs there.

Q: How to find schools that are in my childs school district?
We are moving from overseas to Maryland in a few weeks and need to know how to find out what schools are in our district ( just bought a home in Laurel comes under Anne Arundel county but when I put this into greatschools.com I get a list of hundreds of schools? Am I doing something wrong? ) and can he attend any school in our district (elementary school). Recommendations also welcomed!

A: Look on the school district's web site. Often they have maps that tell which areas of town are assigned to each school. You could also ask the real estate agent. Often this is listed on the real estate websites.

Q: Do all schools in a school district have to be exactly the same with the same daily schedule and curiculum?

Q: Can you change schools within a public school district in Long Island New York?
I wonder where I can find out the answers. We live in Lynbrook NY school district. My son was emotionally bullied last year by two little girls in his second grade last year. I don't think he can take another year of them trying to make him an outcast.

A: Is your school so small that all the kids are in the same class every year? If not, you could try to make sure he is not in their class. But, yes, you can transfer to another school if there is room for your son, but you will have to pay tuition, and in some places that is very high. It might be better to bring this problem up with the principal or the new teacher this year and work on the situation together.

Q: What roles do district, state,a nd federal government agencies have in local schools?
Most public schools are supported financially by a district, state, or federal government agency. Which agency has the most significant influence in making policy and curriculum decisions at the local level? I live in the city of Chicago, and the state of IL. I don't know who has the most power.

A: The American Constitution did not set up the Federal government to control education for fear that it would indoctrinate the citizenry. Each state was to set up it's own education system. Today this is true each state dictates the curriculum and instruction for it's state. The state divides the state into districts. Local property taxes or state allotted taxes pay for public schooling. Now for the Federal gov., they technically can not control public education, but they do, by the money they allot to the states, so in a way the now may and do control state education. Technically the State has the most control, with the Federal gov. controlling the State when they please, with the Districts running last. Money is the controlling factor.

Q: how many highschools are in dallas texas schools district? in DISD?
I need to know for a school project and can't seem to find an answer in the form of a number.

Q: Do schools really look and find out if your child doesn't actually live in the school district?
My parents live in the school district I want her to go to- I would use their address, but do school's really check to see who lives there? I'm in the phonebook in a different district than this school..

A: Our school requires a utility bill in your name with address within district. (in California) There are many hoops to jump through if you want your child to attend a school out of your district. Start with school district you want to attend. Home district will have to agree to let you go. Usually, board meetings have to occur in order to make official. If preferred school is impacted...it will be tough. Go through proper channels...those school secretaries will find out. Good luck and fight for the best school!!
