Q: How do you locate top ranked colleges/grad schools for psychology?
My son would like to major in psychology (child/teen psychology) in college and we are having a hard time finding which colleges have the best programs and rank among the top colleges for psychology. We have checked out the colleges web sites but they do not state how they rank among all the colleges.
We live in TX and he would like in-state but would look at other colleges. Any suggestions how to find which college offers the best programs and which colleges are at the top of the list for psychology?
THANKS............
A: I received my degree from University of North Texas (so did Dr. Phil, at least his Ph.D.)
Also, I was going to go to University of Dallas for it as well, but they were too expensive.
Try looking at www.allpsychologyschools.com
Q: What kind of people are top colleges looking for?
I am thinking about applying to top colleges (Harvard, Stanford, UPenn) and when I ask for advice as to what those colleges are looking for, I always get an answer that you need something unique. Is that true? If so, could someone please explain to me what they actually mean by "unique". thanks.
A: Chris D is a bit misinformed. Ivy leagues are looking for people who show promise. Kids who have proven successful and will continue to be successful, not kids who can simply multitask. An ivy admissions officer can see through a laundry list of extra-curriculars better than anyone else.
I played no sports in high school, never went to the far reaches of the world to do community service and I didn't participate in 80000 clubs and organizations.. I simply got good grades and test scores and did a few things outside of the classroom that I was really involved in.
They like to see FOCUS. So if you do a lot of work with publications and they see that, they'll be impressed. Why the hell would they care if you can play tennis, soccer and football AND work on the yearbook AND be a part of the film club. All that shows is that you're a multitasker. Big whoop.
Just find something to focus on and be very ambitious about it.
That's what I did, and apparently it worked for Princeton, which is where I'll be going in the fall.
Q: How important are SAT subject tests to top colleges? What is a "good" score?
I recently took an SAT World History subject test and am being encouraged to take more on other subjects llike chemistry and math next year. I know many top colleges want SAT subject test scores but how important are they in the acceptance process, especially at the top schools?
A: Every school uses different criteria in their selection process. Some weight SAT more, some give GPA more weight. Some colleges emphasize the essay, others give preference to extracurricular activities, such as volunteer work or community service.
So you should (1) if possible, determine what your field of interest / major would be, (2) identify 2 or 3 schools that are strong in your field of interest, and which look like places you would want to live for 4 years or so, (3) look at the entrance requirements for each of these schools, and (4) bust your butt to do what is necessary to meet the requirements of the schools most attractive to you. Bottom line: start early to give yourself time to do what you need to do.
My son is entering college in the fall, and he found that the scholarship program at this school is entirely based on the SAT scores. At his school, if your SATs are high enough, you can get a 4-year scholarship that pays 100% of tuition. Other schools will differ in what is offered, and in what is necessary to qualify.
Good luck!

Q: What are the top colleges for acting?
Im starting to think about college...and im not exactly sure where to go. I want to know what the top schools are for acting because its what i love to do and although im not sure exactly what i want to do with my life yet...i still kinda want to figure out where i could maybe go somewhere and musical theatre has always been my thing. Colleges?
A: Julliard, American Academy of Dramatic Arts, NYU, Pace University (the actor's studio), etc.
Q: What are the top colleges in southern california for computer science?
I am getting ready to transfer from a 2 year community college and trying to figure the best place to go next for my BS in computer science/engineering. My top choice is UC Irvine, but I also want to see what other options are out there. If someone may know of a search engine, articles or personal advice/recommendations for me I would appreciate it.
A: USC and UCLA are the best out there.
Q: Do top colleges require you to have an extra-curric activity that you are really good at?
If I want to get into top colleges such as Upenn, John Hopkins, do i need excel at an extracurricular activity, such as play a sport or instrument? Or, could i get in with high GPA, (4.0+) , adequat SAT and SAT II scores, and some extra-curric activities?
I play a sport and an instrument. I'm 90% sure that i could make into varsity in my junior year, and in special emsembles in my orchestra...but are they enough?? I know people who are better than me in those areas, such as play tournaments outside of school, or join the county orchestras...I'm going to be a sophmor, am i too late to practice on those and be well at them?
A: Top Universities usually use those as indicators of achievement and also as to how well the student manages their time - it helps predict how well they can handle school.
Q: Top colleges to become a homicide detective ?
I want to become a homicide detective but I'm not sure what are the top colleges to attend and what classes to do they look at based on grades. Any information would be a great help!
A: I'm not sure about specific colleges for that particular major, but here is a website for US colleges and universities: www.utexas.edu/world/univ
And perhaps wikipedia.org has some info on forensic science albeit not the most reliable source but with some additional resources listed. Just type into seach 'forensic science'. Good luck!

Q: What Are Top Colleges for the Economics Major?
I am looking at majoring in Economics, and minoring in Business.
What are top colleges for Economics? I don't really care where in the country... I just don't want to go to HUGE cities, like LA.
But I'll take any help I can get!
Thanks. :)
A: Everyone always forgets this but the best Econ department in the country is at the University of Chicago! Other top 10's include Harvard, Stanford, Yale, Princeton, Michigan, and USC.....
Mostly, be sure you feel comfortable with the program you are in. Check out the professors and what they are researching and their interests because this will help you know if someone there is interested in what you are.
Q: What are the top colleges/universities in California?
I want to become a doctor.
I get straight A's.
I want to go to a great university or college in california.
The city does not matter.
The only things that matter are:
*They are in California
*They are good for "pre-doctors"
Please make a list of the top 20 colleges I should attend if I were to become a doctor.
Also, a list of the top 20 general colleges.
hello... is anyone going to answer...
A: The two highest ranked universities in CA are UC Berkeley and Stanford. Both are tier 1 universities and have the highest caliber student body in the country.
UCLA has one of the best medical facilities in the world. So while UCLA is not quite as highly ranked nationally, it may be better than either UC Berkeley or Stanford with respect to the medical field. It certainly would be on anyone's list of top medical schools.
UC San Francisco is also one the most prestigious medical schools in the nation. UCSF does not have an undergrad program, so it would not be on you current list.
There are numerous excellent college in CA - best to look at the US and World News report on rankings, but keep in mind the "best" colleges may not be "best" in PreMed. Generally, the schools with the best medical departments have the best resources for undergrads too.
Q: How is the conversion made from the high school's 5 scale GPA to the 4 scale number used by top colleges?
My high school uses a 5 scale GPA. (it tops out at 5.0). I know my weighted GPA is 4.72. The colleges I am interested use a 4 scale grade (topping out at 4.0). Would that be 80% of 4.72 or 3.78 or some other number?
A: It's really pretty easy. All the college will do is remove any weighting from the equation and recalculate everything based on a 4.0 scale...4.0 for A; 3.0 for B, and so on. In fact, many college applications will specify that they want only unweighted GPAs on 'em...meaning you'll have to do the calculation yourself.
This kind of ignores the fact that you busted your *** in honors/AP classes while others skated through "regular" classes, but that'll become very apparent when the college looks at your transcripts.
Anyway...best of luck to you!!!
Q: can you suggest me top gaming colleges in usa or canada?
helo, i have completed graduation in BSC computers and working in an animation studio. i wanted to do MS in Gamming. Could anyone plz suggest me top colleges in USA or Canada.
A: Do you want to do programming, or art? I'll assume tech.
In the US, some of the top programs include those at:
- Carnegie Mellon
- University of California, Los Angeles
- University of California, San Diego
- University of Southern California
- New York University
- Rensselaer Polytechnic
- Massachusetts Institute of Technology
- Stanford University
- Southern Methodist University (Guildhall)
You'd also want to take a serious look at Digipen. That's a newer program, but it has established one heck of a reputation in the field. It's very high profile in the industry. I'll link, below:
Sometimes, they aren't listed as "gaming" specifically, but instead are tucked under programs such as multimedia or animation or interactive media or things such as that. It's rarely listed out as "game design" or the like.
