Q: Would a summer internship or a summer college course look better on a college application?
I'm a high school junior and I want to know which would be better for me to do this summer: an internship or taking a course. I want to do pre-med in college, and I'm thinking that the internship will impress colleges more, but on the other hand if I do a course and get college credit, I could get ahead when I'm in college. Can I please get advice from college students who possibly did a summer internship or course(s). Thanks!

A: they're both really good choices...even i can't decide...but id say whatever one you think is better for you...will the course educate you as much as the internship or vice versa... im a senior in high school but i did an internship this summer...and im taking college classes this summer...but i found the internship very helpful...and i got paid!...

Q: Is it possible to juggle a summer college class and an internship at the same time?
I'm going to be taking a one-month summer course (Intro to MacroEconomics) in a university to add as credit towards college. Will I be able to juggle an internship at the same time? Or will it be too stressful for me?

A: It depends on several things. Have you been a good student who is able to balance multiple responsibilities? If so, that would be a good sign. Do you anticipate doing well in the Economics course or are you worried that you will struggle with it? Do you need that course as a prerequisite for something you want to take in the fall? What is your internship? How demanding is it, how many hours a week do they expect you to work, how flexible will your employer be about your hours? Are they willing to have you work a few less hours for that month and possibly add more hours for the rest of the summer? If the internship is a good one, consider simply focusing on it and take a break from classes for the summer. You may get more out of this unique experience and you may find yourself recharged for school after taking a little time off from the classroom.

Q: should I go to stanford or community college for summer?
I got into a Stanford summer college program. I'm a sophomore in high school and i'm not sure if I should take courses there or go to the community college and possibly finish my art and language credits. i will have time in high school to finish my language credits but i don't know if I should go to Stanford instead. It's a great opportunity- a residential program and I'm planning on taking writing and rhetoric, public speaking, and moral philosophy.

A: Standford, hands down. Summer college programs have two potential benefits....the personal/educational/social experience you receive, and the ability to prove to colleges you can handle college-level work. It's not really to finish up classes you could just as well be taking in high school. I think you'll get a better experience in both aspects at Stanford. Taking more challenging classes--and doing well in them (which is key!)--at a more challenging school will help you out more in the long run....especially since you seem excited about the program in general. A big piece of the college-admissions process comes down to the question of "will this person be able to handle our level of difficulty, and will they be able to succeed here". This is where your gpa, SATs, and APs come in. But say you get As in all your classes at Stanford, maybe get a good letter of recommendation (especially if the classes are taught be regular Stanford faculty...watch out for random imported summer profs)....doing well in actual college classes tells schools point blank that you can handle college classes. And hands-down the classes will be more challenging, and more "generalizable" to other schools at Stanford as opposed to a CC. Just remember that you have to do well in these courses, so don't blow them off....you will have to report them when you apply to college, and you want the experience to enhance your application. :)

Q: Summer College Courses for High School Student?
I am planning on applying to some Summer Courses at a few very prestigious universities, such as Brown, Georgetown, Cornell...etc. However my parents are a bit worried about shelling out 2-3 thousand dollars for a 1-2 week course. So my question is whether a Summer course at a high ranking university really makes that much of an impact on your application, does it really make you stand out and is it really worth it? If not, then is taking courses at my local community college just as good?

A: It seems as though a lot of people think that an Ivy-League Summer School is worthless, or at least unimportant, but this simply isn't true. People also say that they are easy to get into. While it may not be as nail-biting an experience as applying to the actual university, getting admitted is not a simple task. The acceptance rate is around 50%, which sounds great, but again, you're competing with some very intelligent people. Generally speaking, people with PSAT scores in the highest three percentiles have a really decent chance, so long as their grades match and they have a decent letter of rec. The program will only make an impact if you do well in it. It shows you are motivated, have a love of learning, and (if you apply to the same school you attended for Summer School) are enthusiastic about that particular school. Also, almost all of the Summer School programs include college seminars, mock interviews, etc., to help prepare you for the college admission process. I guess you could say it helps you in a tangible (grade) and intangible (experience) way. Also, they give you college credit which is always a plus. As to taking community college classes, I would say that most Ivy Leagues aren't overally impressed with them. For instance, if you choose Harvard, which I chose, this is the scenario: Harvard has a fierce pride in itself, and they think they provide the best summer school. Hence, they will almost always give your app. at least a second look if you did well in the summer program. Basically, it gives you an edge, in the same way that being a class officer or student council member does. It adds a dimension to you that the admissions officers may otherwise never see. However, if you have terrible grades etc., summer school won't help you too much.

Q: Are there any free or low cost summer college tours I can go on?
So at my school they provide us with college tours to anywhere in the United States for 25 dollars. I was wondering if there were any college tours that were free or low cost such as these that happen over the summer? Can you give me a website or some information or something?

A: Hello how are you? Actually you can get a free virtual tour of thousands of campuses. Scholarshipsupport.com is the first website that I know that has been offering these tours. They are tours of campuses and reviews given by actual students. I hope this helps. Good Luck!

I am a student and I am not able to get my transcript from my former college, i want to take some summer classes in a college near my hometown this summer and only for this summer. Is it possible? please help!!! And how would i be able to register as???

Q: How long do college summer classes usually last?
I am in college and would like to take two classes this summer to earn credits, but then I would also like to go on vacation with my family afterwards. Will I have enough time? How long do college summer courses usually last?

A: Summer sessions used to be 8 weeks with fulltime students taking 7-9 hours. However you may find individual courses which last a shorter length of time, even as little as 1-4 weeks. You'll have to look at your college's summer course guide to find out just what kind of summer schedules they offer.

Q: Should I take a summer college spanish course in order to skip to accl. spanish 5-6?
I am a high school sophomore in beginning spanish 1-2. my counselor recommends that i should do a summer college course in order to skip spanish 3-4 and go straight to accl. spanish 5-6. This means that by senior year i get to take AP spanish. I dont know what to do. Any help would be appreciated!

A: DO IT!!! If your advisor recommends it, ask if it would be covered by the state in which you live in under like a dual enrollment. If not take the Spanish at the most affordable place. AP courses are the best they help so much in the long run! Think of it as money in the bank.

Q: I took a community college summer course during HS in CA, will it be counted if i apply elsewhere?
I understand that if I take a community college course in California, then it can be calculated into my High school GPA when apply to UCs. But if i apply to another state, like University of illinois at urbana champaign, or other universities in different states, will my community college course credits still be transferrable, and will the grades earned in the summer course still be calculated into my GPA? Will it still look good on my application?

A: you'd have to check with the University of Illinois's admissions, transfer and counceling department..as well as the department of the major of study in which you plan to study there.. they would be able to tell you.. the Community college here in CA wouldn't be able to give you that information..

My intended major in college is photography but I know the following schools offer pre-college summer programs. Rhoad Island School of Design I will apply to these schools but the chances of me getting financial aid is low. I know I can't afford them if I don't. Anyone know of any cheaper summer programs? Q: Should I take four classes during the college summer session?
I'm doing a pre-med program and I have some required courses I still have to get done with and I was thinking of taking them during the summer because I’m not going to be working at all this summer and don’t have any vacation planned either. I haven’t taken summer courses before though. For those of you who have taken college summer courses do you recommend them and do you think its possible to handle four courses during the summer?

A: Some schools will do three summer sessions while others only do two sessions per summer. I did that last year; I took Anatomy & Histology with Forensic Psychology and Great Works with Invertebrate Zoology. I'm a premed too. The last session I only took one class. I did fine, but I'll tell you, you need to study a LOT more than you would for a normal-length class. If you feel you can't keep up with a hard class, then don't take two at a time. I was challenged over the summer sessions but I got a lot of classes out of the way. I say go for it, but only if you can keep on top of things.
