Q: Going to out of state college, what do I do with my driver's license and a license plate?
I am going to a out of state college in Philadelphia and bringing my father's car with insurance under my name. I am planning to work part-time or practice home-based business while attending college. What should I do with my driver's license and the plate? If I keep my current license and plate, will there be any problems working or doing business in Philadelphia?
A: As a college student you are considered a non resident of the state of PA and can still use your out of state license and plate. If you decide to establish permanent residency in PA then you will have 20 days to register your vehicle in PA.
go to www.dmv.org for additional information and click on PA
Q: How do i transfer to a different college in another state?
Ok i want to transfer to a college out of state since no college in my own state offers the major that i want. And i have an aunt that lives next to that out of state college that i want to go to and she is allowing me to live there. Except if i move, then i have to pay out of state tuition fees. Is there any easy way i can avoid out of state fees to allow for a smooth transfer?
A: Yes There is A Very easy Way To Transfer And Not Have To Pay Out Of State Tuition. As A matter Of Fact I Am In The Process Of Switching From One State To Another As Well. All You Have To Do Is Write Your Address At The House In That State Because You Would Be Considered A Commuter In State Student As Long As You Reside In The Same State As The College. Your Permanent Address Can Remain The Same As Long As You Put The In State Address As Your Current Address. Trust Me Everything Will Go Smoothly I Have Done It Many Times. When I Moved From NH To MA I Received In State Tuition Rates Immediately And Did Not Have To Wait Any Amount Of Time To Be Considered A Resident. All I Did Was Provide A Valid MA Address. Good Luck.
Q: What are my chances of getting into a good state college?
I don't do any after school activities, and Im an average B student. What are my chances of getting into a good state college? What should I do to upper my chances into definitely getting into that college. By the way, it's East Stroudsburg University.
A: I had a 2.7 GPA when I graduated high school and a 26 on my ACTs. The only activity I participated in was Choir. I got into a great state unversity that I loved.
would say take your ACTs until you get a good score, and write an essay even if it's not required. Also, get an early application in. They're less selective in the beginning phases. Always apply to multiple schools.
Q: What exactly is the difference between an Ivy league college, and a State college?
Do they use better books, do they teach you things they won't teach you in a State college?
A: Ivy Leagues are private institutions that were part of a football league a long time ago. There are also many private colleges and universities that are not part of the Ivy League but are fantastic schools, and many state universities can claim that as well.
The top-ranked schools usually use the same textbooks as the lower-ranked ones, but demand more from their students - picking up the material faster, covering more material in the classes, and expect them to be getting involved in research. State universities don't really have those expectations of their students.
Q: Is it better to graduate from a good private college or a state honor's college?
I'm a rising high school senior, and I've been looking at all my options. I live close to UVM (University of Vermont), which is one of the top ranked state colleges in the US, and I've been offered admission into their honors college. If I stay in the program for all four years, my diploma will reflect this, and I will graduate with a special honor's degree. On the other hand, I'm also considering some elite private schools, such as Kenyon College, Wheaton, Brandeis, St Lawrence, Swarthmore and Amherst. The thing is, those schools are further from home, and they cost a lot more. For employers and graduate schools, is there a substantial (or any) advantage to a good private school over a public honors college?
A: there really is no difference unless you went to an ivy league school and graduated with honors. What the schools want to see is how well that you have done in the level of classes. If you can stay in the honors programs at UVM for all four years and do really good I would say do that. The only time the school might make a difference is if the employer went to the school as well, some like to hire ppl from the same school if they have a choice.
Q: Is it illegal to establish your address in anothe state prior to going to college to reduce rates?
My grand-daughter lives in another state than I do but is thinking of attending college in my state upon graduation. Is it illegal for her to set up residence here in adance of attending to get the cheaper in state college rates especially if she is a part-time resident during the summer?
A: It might not be illegal, but it will be difficult. Most states require between six months and two years of residence in order to qualify for in-state tuition rates. Living with you for ONLY the summer after graduation would NOT qualify her, in any state, as a resident.
If she intends to finish high school at her current school, her transcript itself would prove residence in her home state. She would have to take a year off between high school and college and move to your state in order to become a resident of your state.
If she moves to your state for her senior year of high school, you would also most likely have to declare her as a dependent on your income tax for that year, unless she is emancipated / independent. Her transcript from the new high school in your state would serve as one item of proof of residency in your state.
Make sure you check the requirements for your state before contemplating this. They are spelled out in detail on the website of every state college, usually under Admissions -- Residency Requirements, or Admissions -- Qualifying for In-State Tuition.
Q: How Much Would It cost to go to a State University (college) for crearive writing?
How much would it cost to go to a state university like Lousiana State Univerisity (LSU). How much would it cost to go to a state college with-out a scholarship for a master's degree in creative writing or journalism? Thank you.
A: Here are the costs for the current school year for LSU. Notice that it costs more if you're not a resident of that state. Tuition and fees go up every year. http://www.bgtplan.lsu.edu/fees/08-09/undergrad.htm
The cost of all programs at a grad school are the same, though some may have lab fees. (Med and law schools are separate schools, so their costs are not the same as, says creative writing vs. biology.)
But each individual grad school is different re costs. You'd just have to look up the schools you're interested.
Costs are the same whether you pay for yourself or have financial aid. The aid just pays part for you.
Q: Is it ok to transfer from a state university to a community college?
I'm a freshman at a state university. I'm thinking about transferring out to go to a community college this Spring semester to take my basics because I've heard it is significantly easier. However, I'm wondering am I limiting myself by doing this as far as job prospects go. What I mean is, when the employer sees that I switched to a community college from a state college and then back to a state college (to get my degree) on my resume, will I be considered as inferior to other applicants because I went to a community college? Is there anything else I should be concerned about if I were to switch to a community college to do my basics?
A: If I were an employer, I would wonder why you went from a university to a community college (since usually people only do that if they get kicked out of their university). You mentioned that you want to do this because it's "easier." Is that really a good enough reason to do this?
Remember, you're going to have to RE-APPLY to your university to get back in as a transfer student, and what happens if you don't get accepted back in? (It could easily happen that way, as state schools receive tons of applications at the transfer level.)
I recommend taking some of your "basics" at the community college during the summer. This way, you're not leaving your university, but you're working on credits towards your degree at a much cheaper price during the summer session. Just be sure that you check with a counselor at your university first to get clearance for anything you want to take at the community college.

Q: Are there any ways to cut cost when going to an out-of-state college?
I am from Michigan and have lived here all of my life. I want to go to Georgia to go to college and already have a few picked out. As in many states the cost to go to the college if coming from a different state is twice what the in-state attendy would be paying. Are there any ways to bring that cost down? Other than student loans and scholorships.
A: You could try to get in-state residency. But to do that most states will require you live and work in the state **without going to school** before that will be granted. Georgia is one such state. You can review the residency policy information there at
http://www.usg.edu/student_affairs/faq/residency
or go to any website's of the Georgia schools you are interested in and search for "in-state residency" and I'm sure it will be there.
You can also try to obtain some outside scholarships:

Q: What is the best plan of attack when researching an out of state college?
I will have an associate's and plan to transfer out of state for my bachelor's and live off campus. Any suggestions for good websites on college searches, a national job search, cost of living comparisons, and rental property would be awesome!
A: Wow, now there is a loaded question. For starters, you must ask yourself where you are willing and not willing to go. You must then search out a university which has a B.A./B.S. in your field of study. Sometimes a good indicator for how good a program may or may not be is if the university's program goes beyond the bachelor level (ie M.A./M.S. or PhD). These can also be an indicator as to the amount of resources available. Once you have narrowed down the list (no more than say 4 or 5). Do some area searches for apartments and houses and get a rough feel for the cost of living. Then start applying to the universities you wish to attend. Once you have been accepted to one or more, file your FAFSA. It would also not hurt to file for grants, scholarships, etc. You will need to contact the institution's financial aid offices to find out what scholarships are available. These can often be found on the WEB sites but you may need to actually contact the institution via phone to get more information. Once your decision is made as to where you want to go, then it's time to seriously look for a place to live as well as a place of employment. Depending on your finiacial needs, you may be able to land a work-study at the school. I recomend this for a few reasons. If you can land on of these, the staffs are usually fairly understanding when it comes to school and work. The pay is usually not great, but the hours can be flexed to suite your schedule. If you get to work in the department in which you are specializing, this can halp you to get to know the faculty and staff. This can open doors down the road. The trick is to make sure you stay focussed on school and not let the jobs pull you away. They have a tendancy to do this.
I know I threw a lot at you at once here, but I hope it helps. I have less than a year left on my M.A. an know how much of a pain all of this can be.
Q: How much more expensive is out-of-state college?
Basically, how much does your state help with college, if you aren't in desperate need of financial aid just to attend school? Would it hinder you much with money to go out-of-state? I know it depends on the situation, but generally? Thanks.
A: My daughter goes to LSUS and the tuition is the same for in-state or out-of-state, but the fees are different--in-state fees are $483.50 while the out-of-state fees are $2646.50 per semester. In the catalog it states, "LSUS has available non-resident tuition exemptions for students from out-of-state who meet the criteria." I would imagine that other schools have the same policy, and I think federal grants and loans are the same everywhere.
If you want to go to a particular school because of its reputed excellence in the field of study you wish to pursue, then contact their admissions counselor. If you have a great GPA you might qualify for a scholarship or an out-of-state tuition exemption. Good luck to you.
Q: How hard is it to get into a out of state college?
Lets say i have a 3.0 GPA got a descent score on SAT(havent take them yet)and im not the richest guy in the world. My friends told me that it is almost impossible to get into a out of state college. Is it really?
A: Wait, are you talking about a state school (like the SUNY or UMASS system) or a private school? Because I would imagine that the possible difficulties in getting into an out-of-state school would be greater if you're applying to a school that's part of a public state university system than if you're applying to a private school. Also keep in mind that many schools like having at least a few out-of-state students on campus because it increases campus diversity.
Incidentally, the only school I ever got rejected from was a school in my state. Both of the out-of-state schools I applied to in graduate school accepted me.
Q: Would it be a good idea for Bridgewater State College to soon become a university?
I am a student at Bridgewater State College in Bridgewater, Mass. Recently, I recieved an email from the school's administration explaining about the possibility of the college becoming a university in the near future. The school's administration is in the process of setting up exploratory teams and scheduled open community discussions to assess the feasibility of the college's current and future status. It seems exciting, but I wonder what people throughout The Commonwealth thinks of the possibility of having a second state-run university system, other than UMass?
A: I'm a professor at Framingham State College - we're also thinking about becoming a university instead of a college (as are a couple of the other state colleges in Massachusetts). The only real difference is in the title. University means that the school offers graduate degrees. So it wouldn't really be another university *system*, just a name change.
That said, I think it would be beneficial. University sounds better than College, which may attract more and better students. Also, even though there's no real difference to an undergraduate student between a college and a university here in the US, overseas the college is really more of a high school, so a name change may help recruit students from other countries.
Changing the name to University might also help in getting money for the schools - just because it sounds more prestigious.
Q: What are my chances of getting accepted in a out of state college?
Like what do they look for?
And what would I have to do, anything special?
Am a average student meaning not gifted.
Is it hard to get into another college elsewhere other then your own state?
Thanks Kitty : )
A: High SAT scores!!! :) if u can score high on ur SAT's that will be the biggest help! Letters of recomendations from your teachers, doctors, various educators, school clubs, or that college's past Allumni can also help u out quite a bit.
Community service helps a lot 2! Especially if the organization writes u a thank u letter or writes to the college saying that ur basically awesome. If u played any sports in high school or belonged to any school club that could help a lot! Being a minority helps a lil bit 2.
It is harder to get into a college out side ur own sate.... and more expensive!!! But, it doesn't hurt to try! Apply everywhere!!!
