Q: New College?????
Im going to college this year but ive moved to a different part of the country. Im so accustomed to having my school friends around that i have no clue how i would manage without a single friend!! Im a little on the shy side.I live in India and people in this new city speak their regional language which im not acquainted with. How am i supposed to find new friends in this completely new environment.Im afraid that i might be left alone and friendless. The worst part is that all my school friends are together in one college and enjoying!!! Will i be able to enjoy equally in this new unfamiliar environment? Pls help me!!!

A: easy join a club your really interested about or something along those lines your bound to see or find someone you have something in common with after all your both in the same club right. Simply strike up a conversation such as how long have you been here i just moved here and dont really know my way around where is a cool place to hang out and next thing you know you start intreacting and making friends. Thats what college is about meeting new poeple. Make the best of your situation :) Best way to break the shyness is taking risk trust me i am very social and good at making friends people like poeple who interact with them more than those who ignor them

Q: What is a good college in New England for both science and the arts?
I'm browsing colleges, and I am wondering about what I want to do in life. I want to be involved in enviornmental sciences, but also in musical programs. I was wondering if anyone knows of a good college in New England who can fit those needs. Any ideas? All feedback appreciated.

A: Try a liberal arts school that's also strong in science - like Amherst, Smith, or Williams.

Q: Am I required to use previous college credits when transferring to a new school?
Three years ago, transcripts from my previous college show that I failed some classes and the others were almost as terrible. I believe my GPA was somewhere around 1.8 out of 4.0 and I earned 28 credits. I am planning on going to medical school in the future and of course, I need a higher GPA. That said, I was hoping to start as a freshman this time around. Could I opt out of using that college credit and go in new? Any feedback would be appreciated.

A: Some schools have what they call "academic forgiveness" meaning if you went to college, flunked out, then come back after a certain amount of time, they will let you retake the courses and replace the grade. I know my school has it, and it's something like a 5 year time period. Look for a good premed school that has that, and you should be good to go. Even if it does end up counting, work your butt off, get straight A's. Even if your GPA isn't great for med school, if you have good references and a good MCAT score, they will look at your grades as improvement if they're much better now. Good luck! All grades/credits from any institution will count or be seen on your transcript. When you apply for programs, they ask if you've previously attended a college, etc. If you lie, you may be in trouble. Best to be honest upfront. I would personally check into the academic forgiveness policies of the school you're interested in, and maybe wait another year or two if necessary. It will benefit you in the long run.

Q: What laptop do you recommend for a new college student?
I am going to college this fall (leaving in 1 week!) and I will be buying a new laptop for college. What laptop is best? I am particularly looking for one with a lot of memory, good wireless internet and (hopefully) less than $1,000. The $1,000 price range is flexible but not by much. Any help/comparisons between laptops you can recommend will be helpful.

A: It depends. Are you more partial to certain brands? When buying a laptop, remember that it only comes with trial software. Things like anti-spyware and anti-virus software, as well as Microsoft Office will have to be bought separately. Make sure you factor that into your overall budget. The majority of laptops come with wireless cards already integrated, so that takes care of one part. High memory for a laptop is between 3-4 gbs of DD2 memory. 3 should be sufficient for a college student, unless you tend to use a lot of memory. The next factor is size. Are you looking for something very portable? If so, you should consider something with a screen about 14.1"-15.4". There are 12" ones, but those are almost too small. Next, consider whether AMD v. Intel is important to you. Intel processors tend to be more energy efficient, meaning they don't get quite so hot, while AMD is cheaper. Not only that, but only 2 brands come with restore disks: Dell and Toshiba. Any other brand you would have to either have the disks made for you, make them yourself, or buy them (Restore disks allow you to put your computer back to factory settings in case you need to reboot/reset). It takes about 3 hours on average to make a set of restore disks, sometimes more. Using those things will help you narrow down your selection significantly. Your best bet is to look at laptops on BestBuy.com and use the left hand menu to narrow down the selection. You can choose brand, size, memory, hard drive size, processor brand, etc that way. I personally recommend buying an HP, along with services like Optimization/Restore Disk Creation from Geek Squad. Good Luck =)

Q: What college in New York is best for someone getting a psychology degree?
I am trying to find a college in New York to attend that is very good for someone trying to get a degree in Psychology. I have three choices 1. Binghamton University 2. Queen College 3. SUNY Plattsburg Which one would be best?

A: http://www.graduateshotline.com/psy.html Here is a list of top programs in US. Psychology is rated for the graduate programs, not undergrad. Binghamton is the best from your list. apa.org for more info on psychology programs. Plan on going on to graduate school. Psychology is not a career without at least a master's degree. (psych professor)

Q: What is a highly competitive college in New York state where you can get a degree in fahsion design?
What is a highly competitive college in New York state where you can get a degree in fahsion design?

A: The Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) and The Pratt Institute are perhaps the best schools in the country for fashion design. They are both in New York, both are very reputable schools, and admission to both schools is very competitive. You may want to take a look at the websites I've provided below to learn a little bit about these schools. For instance, on these sites I learned that Norma Kamali, Michael Kors, and Calvin Klein went to FIT. Betsey Johnson went to Pratt. Best wishes to you.

Q: which community college in New York is the best in finance major or engineering?
Hi, a friend of mine in Singapore wants to come to New York and attend a college here. He wants to attend a community college first then transfer to a good university such as NYU, Columbia, Cornel. Which community college should he attend in New York? he is interested in finance and engineering majors. In other words, which community college is affiliated with good universitys so that credits earned in the college are transferable to the university.

A: If he attends a community college first, he should be able to transfer into a public university -- but it is HIGHLY unlikely that he would be able to transfer into a top private university like Cornell, Columbia or NYU. Let me repeat this -- it is HIGHLY UNLIKELY. Tell him not to come to the US in order to go to a community college.

Q: How much is the GMC discount when buying a new car with that "new college graduate" rebate?
I'm planning on buying a new truck and am looking into a Silverado. GMC has a deal where they give you a discount/rebate if you buy a vehicle within two years of graduating college. I am just wondering if anyone else has taken advantage of this program and how much was taken off your price?

A: The College Program gets you a car or truck at GM Supplier cost. That's below dealer cost but more than the GM Employee cost. The discount varies from model to model. And it also makes a difference on how many options are on the truck too. This means there's far too many possibilities of what the discount may be. Even the sales personnel don't know how much the discount prices are in every truck in stock. Your best bet is to find the truck you want and have the salesperson show you the invoice.

Q: Is it tough to adjust as a transfer student when you transfer to a new college as a junior standing student?
Or is it always better to transfer in your sophomore year? How is the adjustment if you are not aware how the new environment would look like? If you don't have anyone you know in your new college?

A: It's okay. It's not that tough. It depends upon your personality, character and self confidence. At first you might not get friends immediately, but sooner or later you'll surely will. Being a junior transferree is no different from being a sophomore. Just the same. It just takes a little time to adapt to the new environment. It's normal to be nervous at first, but just be positive and things will all turn out to be okay. Whatever the new environment would look like, you'll get used to it in time. Don't worry.. Good luck, God bless. =) Always smile to be seen as approachable so you'll get friends easily.

Q: What is a good, yet not majorly expensive college in New York if I wanted to major in Journalism?
I'd love to attend a college in New York. It's a huge dream of mine. Specifically, I want to be in the journalism where I work behind the scenes in a broadcast station like abc news...what type of profession is that? Or will majoring in journalism be enough?

A: Fordham University is a good college for pre-journalism. Lots of graduates working in all media, including Charles Osborne, CBS.

Q: How much time do i need to be living in New York to receive their states Financial Aid for college?
I currently live in New Jersey and am planning on going to one of the CUNY colleges in New York. I am extremly short on money and will need lots of help, so im wondering if anyone knows anything about the financial aid program or any other program that can help me pay for college. =] thanxx.

A: Most states require that you live in the state for one year to receive in-state tuition and financial aid.

Q: What should I wear to my visit at a college in New York City on Wednesday?
Well, I have two outfits picked out, so I'd like it if you chose one, that way I could see which one everyone likes more. They are pretty much the same outfit-- just different colors. Just if it means anything-- I have blue eyes and curly brown-- sort of blond hair. Thanks. Outfit #1: Short-sleeved gray polo shirt with pretty long denim shorts with gray New Balance sneakers. Outfit #2: Short-sleeved sort of bright green polo shirt with really long khaki shorts with totally white New Balance sneakers. This college thing isn't formal or anything, so don't tell me that I have to dress up. I've tried dressing up for these things before, and I just end up looking stupid. Which outfit do you think would look better? Thanks everyone.

A: Outfit #2 sounds good but I'd go with jeans instead of shorts. Just my opinion. Hope it helps.

Q: Must you send transcripts to a new college?
I want to transfer colleges in the spring. My grades in one class are not as high as I would like. Can I not send my transcripts from my current college and start over? If I must, will this grade effect my new GPA? I need some answers, anything will help! Thanks!

A: You don't have to transfer your credits if you don't want to. Just attend the new college as if the old one didn't happen. Your old GPA will stay with the old school and will not affect your new one. If you're ok with starting over, that's ok but remember that you cannot use any of the courses from the old college to fulfil prerequisites at the new one, or they will want the transcript.
