Q: College grants?
Okay, here's the deal I'm pushing 30, have little to no income. and no kids. I'm thinking of joining the navy or going to a community college, but I want to go to college regardless. The financial aid and aquiring grants seem to confuse me some. I've been told, for someone like me(little to no income, late 20's), can pretty much go tho college for free. How exactly do I go about doing this? Should I go for a Pell Grant or some other grant? I assume I need to fill out a FAFSA before I can be considered for any grant of any kind? I'm getting desperate/ left behind here and I don't think I want to join the navy if I can go to college for next to nothing Right now. Hey, thanks for your time and help!!...It's starting to get a little pathetic here lol. And please just don't tell me to just surf the web for grants-tell me which ones I need to look for please.

A: First of all you've got to apply to the college of you choice. then you should apply for the FAFSA before march 1 and make them send the results to your school. That way the school will know what are your needs and what will they award to you.

Q: Are there any college grants out there for a single 24 year old male?
I'm looking for information for college grants and scholarships to a college in Orlando, Florida for a 24 year old white male who is 100% independent. Anyone have any tips?

A: Go to the Financial Aid office. They will have records of what's available.

Q: What happens if I have too many college grants?
I have all of my college paid for and I have other college grants as well. So what happens to those college grants?? I know that if its a scholarship they give the money back to you, but these are state grants. Do they take the money back and give it to other people? Or does it come back to me?

A: As long as you meet the college guidelines for class attendance and minimum hours, they will give you a check for the rest of the money. The purpose for this money is for you to use it for college related expenses (i.e.-gas to get you to and from school and other living expenses). Just make sure that you have your books and all that stuff and then it's your call on what to spend the money on. By the way, there is no such thing as too many grants (if you qualify and get the money, then feel very lucky)

Q: What are some places where I can apply for college grants?
Im a sophmore right now, and once my dad moved out he didnt care about my sister or I anymore, so I have to find a new way to pey for college since my mom cant afford it. Are there any online sites where I can apply for grants? I plan on attending FIT or Parsons in New York.

A: I very much understand your situation. My dad wasn't around, so my single mom didn't have enough money to cover college tuition for me and my brother. Here are some good sites that offer grants and scholarships: http://www.fedmoney.org/ http://apps.collegeboard.com/cbsearch_ss/welcome.jsp http://www.freegovmoney.net/ http://www.educationplanner.com/education_planner/paying_article.asp?sponsor=2859&articleName=Grants_and_Scholarships http://www.studentawards.com/ http://www.college-scholarships.com/ You also have the option to take out a student loan even though you have to pay them back. My entire 4 years were paid for with student loans, and I consolidated them once I graduated and have one low payment every month. If you are considering a student loan you should get a federal student loan. Here's what you need to do to get one: 1) Fill out the FAFSA. This will determine if you are eligible for financial aid. Go here: http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/ 2) Once you are eligible for aid, choose a government-based student loan. The best loan to get is a Federal Perkins Loan. These have low interest rates and the government will help you pay it back as long as you stay enrolled in school. You also don't need a cosigner or good credit for it. For more info go here: http://www.studentfinancedomain.com/student_loans/perkins_student_loans.aspx 3) The next best loan to get is a Subsidized Stafford Loan. This has many of the same benefits as a Perkins Loan. Learn more here: http://www.studentfinancedomain.com/student_loans/subsidized_stafford_loan.aspx Hope this helps! Good luck!

Q: Where can I find college grants for a single mother on welfare?
My sister is a single mother on welfare and has been denied loans because she defaulted on loans after getting into a car accident. Are there any trustworthy foundation that give college grants to people in that situation?

A: unfortunately once you have a student loan go into default, the chances are almost nil that you can even get a pell grant. the govt. is pretty strict with that. Most foundations will not give private grants to people if they are not eligible for pell due to defaulting on a loan. you could go to fast.com or scholarship.com and see what's available but more than likely she's out of luck. Colleges tell you over and over again do NOT default on a student loan no matter what and I understand she was in an accident but she should have contacted them and had it deferred..there are at least 5 different methods of deferrment..she could have deferred payments for up to 4 years with no payment at all.. once it hits default. the govt doesn't much care. funds are limited and they will give the money to someone else who is much more likely to profit "in their eyes'.

I would like to do some grant writing. How can I find out what kinds of college grants are out there and how to write out a request for a grant? Thanks!!

Q: Do you have to pay back college grants when you graduate?
I was just looking over how much in grant money i have been using through out my college career and i've notice i have a lot of money from grants. So basically im asking if i have to pay that back or do i just have to pay back the Loan money?

A: Grants no. Loans yes.

Q: My son started college in DeKalb, IL this year and he needs more grants to pay for his college expense?
He received a grant from FAFSA and MAP grants. He needs more money for his living expenses as soon as possible. Please tell me what he needs to do to receive free college grants. He is in a bind. Please help us.

A: There are millions of grants out there. Tell him to go to the financial aid office and ask for a grant book. Most offices have one of these. There are grants for women who wear glasses, men who are tall and short, color of eyes, hair and even bald. Most of these aren't much but added together they will be something and that is better than nothing. The grant monies always seem to come when they are needed the most. I went to a community college and had a FAFSA, Cal Grant, plus a latina women, glasses and a single mother grants. They really helped out when times were a little rough. Congratulations to you and your son for getting to college, why to you? You were probably the driving force behind him so you get kudos too. The best of luck to you and your son on what will be a life changing endeaver.

A: Check out Federal Student Aid Web Site or FAFSA http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/ I suggest you explore all federal funding and grant options at the Federal Student Aid website http://federalstudentaid.ed.gov/ You may also want to read the Handbook of the Pell Grant -- this is an 86 page document that contains everything about the grant http://ifap.ed.gov/sfahandbooks/attachments/0203Vo3MasterFile.pdf Or you can call the Federal Student Aid Information Center http://www.ed.gov/programs/fpg/gtepfpg.pdf at 1-800-433-3243 and ask them if there are any programs for women of your age Aside from FAFSA http://www.fafsa.ed.gov and Pell Grant http://www.ed.gov/programs/fpg/index.html , you may want to explore private foundation grants Also check out Fastweb http://www.fastweb.com For private grants, you may want to check the Foundation Center's Foundation Grants for Individuals Online http://gtionline.fdncenter.org . It's a subscription based website ($9.95 per month) and their opening blurb says that the database is ideal for "students, artists, academic researchers, libraries and financial aid offices." You may be able to find grants from private foundations.

Q: Why does my housing need to know if I recieved college grants?
I live in a projects type apartment and since i am an adult i need to go with my parents for some annual check up thing (not quite sure what it is) can i just say i'm not going to college? i didn't apply for any. i don't really want to go through with any of the hassle.

A: They might have rights to tax deductions if they are housing someone that has government loans, grants etc. Just be honest if they ask you, it is always best. They might just need to know for survey reasons. They want to know how many people are trying to better their life through education in the apartment complex. That's all I got for you.
